This article retells the story of John Henry, a steel driving man (who became a legend and part of the folklore of the region. John Henry was the African American man who beat a steam drill hammer, But winning wore him out and he never did catch up on his rest, he took sick and died shortly after the contest. Cornelius, known by "Neil" verified the story as he witnessed the contest that went on for a day and part of the next. He was a boy at the time who came to the site with his father. Neil carried water and nails to the men.
