Biography

There has been much misinformation passed on about the wife of Major John Lewis. From their son John’s gravestone, it is known her name is Isabella. She is Isabella Miller, daughter of James Miller and Mary Trotman.[1]

Isabella was born on 24 August 1640.[2]

She was the daughter of James Miller Sr., who settled in York County about 1648. James received a grant of 150 acres on Rowlston Creek and died in 1657. It can now be determined that she was the one interred as Mrs. Isabella Yard born 24 August 1640 and died 9 February 1703/4, she having married Robert Yard after Major Lewis’ death.

Although she is not mentioned in her father’s Will, she is mentioned in her brother James Miller Jr's Will.

Their son Colonel John "Councillor" Lewis married Elizabeth Warner, the daughter of Augustine Warner and Mildred Reade.[3]

After John passed away, she married Robert Yard.

She passed away on 9 Feburary 1703/4.[2] Isabella's gravestone is in the small cemetery at Warner Hall, Gloucester County, Virginia, where Emigrant John is also buried.

Conflicting Marriage Information

"This would indicate she died before Major John, and he had her buried in his family cemetery and ordered a stone for her."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Isabella by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Isabella:

Miler-237 and Miller-1412 appear to represent the same person because: this appears to be the same person, same husband and son, you decide

Miller-56450 and Miller-1412 appear to represent the same person because: clearly intended to be the same person, but, a lot of duplicate husbands and not a clear ancestry.

Minor note: Elizabeth Miller's father James Miller also patented land (100 acres) in 1637 based on the headwrights of himself and his wife Mary who arrived in Virginia in 1637. I feel he patented another 50 acres (maybe using the headwright of his indentured servant in the 1637 ship passage) in then New Kent County, Virginia (now James City County) which was owned by the Miller family until 1782 (John Miller listed as owner at time of sell). I have located these three land purchases by reviewing notes on adjacent land owners in the old land Headwright system and can show there locations on a modern map if any one has an interest. Elizabeth Warner, who married about 1691 to John Lewis III was the daughter Augustine Warner Jr
This profile, once again, appears to have incorrect parents. Would someone like to take the responsibility of correcting relationships in this profile?

Isabella is noted an an Historically Significant Ancestor. Although many sources show the wife of John Lewis to be Isabella Warner, daughter of Augustine Warner and Mary Townley, it does not appear that Augustine Warner had a daughter Isabella. Jown Lewis married Isabella Miller, daughter of James Miller.

[[1]] [[2]] I have changed her parents from the Warners to the Lewises and proposed a merge with Isabella Miller, but then I realized that I need to get group assent.
