James "Jack" Miller was born on 27 April 1912 in Rural Retreat, Wythe County, Virginia, the youngest of six children and three sons of [[Miller-15285|William and Pauline Prickett Miller.
James Robert Jackson Miller was named for his mother's three brothers: James (Jamie), Robert (Robbie), and Minter Jackson Prickett.[1]
Shortly before Jack was born, his mother moved the family from nearby Groseclose to her mother's home in Rural Retreat, where all the children grew up.

On 24 November 1938, when he was twenty-six, he married Ruth Adelaide Newell in Washington D.C. She bore him one child, a daughter whom they named Mary Gail.[5]
Jack was in poor health and was in a lot of pain, unable to work, etc. , apparently caused by adhesions as a result of abdominal surgery, probably an appendectomy, at an earlier date. He died on 27 January 1944, when he was thirty-one, in a hospital in Marion, Smyth County, Virginia.
He is buried in Rural Retreat, in the Mountain View Cemetery.
