Biography

(From Find A Grave Memorial)

There does not appear to be an identified grave for immigrant Isaac Miller, "Sr.," (who would make his way to Rutherford County Tennessee and is associated with founding "Millersburg" near present day Christiana). Two sons, Capt Isaac Miller and James R. Miller are listed as buried here. A 1973 index by the Historical Society of Rutherford County concluded the stone for Isaac J. Miller was he, but dates on the stone are not clear and as recorded by the society would make his death year later than indicated by Isaac Sr.'s will. A 2015 directory and brochure, Forgotten Places, Living Traditions, Rutherford County's Historic Cemeteries, published by Middle Tennessee State University, concluded "Isaac Sr." is buried here.

The following is from the lead page of "The Millers of Millersburg And their Descendants," by John Bailey Nicklin, Jr., 1923:

"Isaac Miller, the Immigrant ancestor of this family, was born in Ireland about 1755, and died in Tennessee in 1806. He appears to have been twice married, but the name of his second wife or any records to her has not been found....His first wife was Margaret ____, with whom (and their eldest child, Jennett) he migrated to America about 1781* and settled in Western Pennsylvania. He was the Revolutionary Soldier referred to in the letters from the Adjutant General's Office, Washington, and the Pennsylvania State Library, Harrisburg. After the Whisky Rebellion (in 1794), in which he appears to have had some part, he removed with his family, via Virginia and Kentucky (Barren County) to Tennessee, and settled at a place he named Millersburg, in Rutherford County. ...children:

-Jennett Miller, born about 1778, married William Johnson Jr. -Robert Miller, born about 1782; maried Peggy Lamb -Matthew Miller, born about 1784; married Mary Frances Johnson -John Miller, born about 1786; married Mildred Johnson -Isaac Miller, Jr., born about 1788; married Elizabeth Prestridge -Mildred ("Milly") Miller, born 1792; married first Daniel Dicus, second, Jonathan Sherwood -Nelly Miller, born about 1794, married John Wilkerson -William Miller, born 1796, married first Peggy Akree, second, Peggy Norman.

and by second wife: James R. Miller, born about 1800**, died 1846; married first Rebecca Johnston, second, Kate (Claytor) Blakely"

(Note...Internet genealogy profiles can be found that conclude that this Isaac's father was Rev. Alexander Miller of Virginia, but Rev. Miller's son Issac was not our Isaac profiled here (different birth places and spouses).

  • Some historical accounts say immigration was halted during Am Rev years, so arrival date needs more research. An Isaac Miller is listed in "Names Of Persons Who Took The Oath Of Allegiance To The State Of Pennsylvania Between The Years 1776 And 1794," Vol III, Page Number: 36 of 811, LINN, JOHN B AND WM. H. EGLE. He appears on line 24, "September ye 11, 1777."
    • May have been born earlier. He's mentioned in Will while William, born 1796 is only child not mentioned , perhaps because was very young.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Isaac by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Isaac:
