Biography

Birth & Christening

She was born in her parents house in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The house was built by her grandfather, Peter Schenkel. [1]

Early Life

By the year 1923, Her father and uncle had moved their families to Milwaukee for better jobs. From her diary written at the age of 15, she had a busy life of school, helping her mother with cooking, going to church each night, and socializing with friends, the sisters and fathers of the church, and relatives. She was able to get about the city by walking and riding the buses and streetcars. It appeared that her parents gave her the freedom to move about town on her own. Her parents provided a happy household for her as well.
As a young adult, she liked to paint and work with clay. She met Norman during WWII but her mother would not allow them to be married until after the war. [2]

Married Life

After their marriage she and husband Norman moved into the attic of her mother's house, which was set up like an apartment but without a kitchen or bathroom. Their first born was born while living there. A few years later, when she was pregnant with her second daughter, she and her husband purchased a house down the street.[3]
She was a good mother to her children and was an artist when she could, having numerous paintings held by relatives and two that are owned by the Bailey Circus Museum in Baraboo WI.[4]
She raised the children in Milwaukee WI, Delavan WI, and in Charlottesville, VA before dying of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 48.[5]
