In 1756 when Maria was about seven years old, the Indians scalped and killed her father, captured them and separated Maria and her brother from their mother and baby whom they never saw again. After being captive for eight to nine years, they were finally exchanged in Philadelphia in return for an Indian chief held by the whites. Her brother went back to live with the Indians and was never heard from again.
