Biography

In 1800 at Charlton Township, Saratoga County, New York (p. 24 of census) is Ogden Miller. There are 2 males under 10 [Justus and Gilbert], [ recheck - should be 1 male 10-26 (Ogden)] and one male 26 to 45 [Ogden]. There are 5 females under 10 [Mary, Wilmot, Harriet, Berthena] and 1 female 26 to 45 [Rachel]. They are living next to Isaac Vosburgh [or Vosburgh] Mathew McKinney, Thomas Davinson, Abillebe Morehouse, Dudley Smith, Gares Harman, Thomas Van Alstine, John Van Pette. Not far away in the same Township is Robert Nickeson, James McKinney, Nathan Purdy, Samuel Hamlin, Robert McKenney, Absalom Bakus, and William Nickinson.

In 1810 at Charlton Township, Saratoga County, New York (p. 202 of census) Ogden Miller, with what appears to be 16 members in the family. There are 4 males under 10 [Charles would be one], 1 male between 10 and under 16 [Gilbert], 1 male between 16 and under 26 [Justus] and one male over 45 [This would likely be Ogden Sr.]. There are 2 females under 10, 3 females, 10 but under 16 [Harriet and Berthena], 3 females, 16 but under 26 [Mary, Wilmot], 1 female, 26 but under 45 [Rachel]. Also it appears that there is one other free person in the household. They are living near Aaron Van Patter, Henry Greer, Dudley Smith, Abijah St. John, Samuel Brown, Tunis Swart. [There is a Henry St. John and an Aaron Van Patter in the 1842 Malahide census]

In 1820 at Charlton Township, Saratoga County, New York (p. 212 of census), is Ogden Miller with 12 members in the family. There are 3 males 10 and under 16, 1 male 16 to 18 [possibly Charles], 1 male 18 to 26 [possibly Gilbert], 1 male over 45 [Ogden]. There are 3 females 16 to 26 [Harriet was married by 1820], 1 female 26 to 45 [possibly Wilmot] and 1 female over 45 [Rachel]. Two persons are engaged in Agriculture. They have no slaves. They are living next to Dudley Smith, Abijah St. John, Henry Van Hooser and Elisa Carrothers, and Aaron Schermorhorn.

In 1830 Ogden Miller is not listed in the index but the actual census which is barely readable gives him at Saratoga County, Charlton Township (p. 120 [236]). There are 2 males 20-30, 1 male 60-70, 1 female 20-30 and 1 female 60-70. He is living next to Peter Conde, David Skinner, David McOmber. Also an Ogden Miller at Salina, Onondaga, New York, p. 23.

In 1840 Ogden Miller is at Charlton Township, Saratoga County (p. 016). He and his wife are between 70 and 80 years old. There are no other members in the family. He is not listed in the 1840 census. They are living next to the family of a John Miller is between 30 and 40 years of age. He has a wife between 20 and 30 and a daughter under 5. They are living near a Robert Caruther, John Black, Thomas Vasbough, Thomas Westhammer and Peter Conde.

Saratoga Land records (Bruce visited Land registry office Oct 2002) show that Ogden Miller was grantor of property to John Miller in 1840 at Charlton Twp. This is likely the J. Miller northwest of West Charlton in the 1878 atlas of Saratoga. He is near Vosburgh, Gilchrist, A. Condt, A De Graff, and just east of the Corners Episc. Church. 10th of July 1840 between Ogden Miller of the town of Charlton and Rachel to John Miller LL114. Also Ogden is given in the municipal records as an overseer in 1814, fence viewer in 1817 pathmaster in 1819 Charlton Town Book 1792-1865 Bound Brookside Historical Museum, Ballston Spa p. 30. Charlton 7 Nov 1797 p.33 No. 3 Beginning at Abijah St. Johns thence east to Ogden Millers from thence east to the Galway Rd. Ogden is not listed as a head of household in the 1790 New York census, but may be living with his father at Ballston Township, Saratoga County, New York or may be in Upper Canada.

Ogden's son Gilbert Miller indicates in a land petition at London District (Malahide Twp) in 1822 that he is the son of Ogden Miller of the Township of Hallowell in the District of Midland (Prince Edward Co., Ontario). No UC land petition found for Ogden.

In 1850 Check for a John Miller. The 1877 Atlas for Saratoga, shows a John Miller between West Charlton and Blue Corners. There is an A. Conde and numerous Gilchrists nearby. There is an Episcopal church at Blue corners and a Presb. church and cemetery north of West Charlton.

In addition to Justus and Mary there is also buried at the West Charlton Cemetery, Saratoga County, New York, a Marion Miller, wife of Robert Gilchrist. She was born 18 June 1814 and died 11 August 1879. He was born 14 September 1806 and died 3 August 1876.

There is an Ogden Miller who immigrated to Oxford County, Ontario in 1842 (Nom. Index to RG 5, B47, Vol. 7 (1842-1846) Upper Canada Natualization Records, Families Vol. 19, No. 2, 1980). Further research required to determine if this is same Ogden Miller.

According to land petition of son Gilbert, Ogden was of the Township of Hallowell, Prince Edward Co., Midland district in 1818/1822 (date of petition). However there is an Ogden Miller at Charlton Twp., Saratoga Co., NY between 1800 and 1840.

g.s. of two childen, Justus and Mary, indicate that their mother was Rachel. However neither Wilmot, Harriet, Berthena nor Gilbert had daughters named Rachel.

One of the daughters below may be Marion who married Robert Gilchrist. They are buried at the West Charlton Cemetery, Saratoga county, New York. ix. A DAUGHTER, b. ca x. A SON, b. ca. 1804 xi. The 1860 census for Charlton Township gives a Titus V. Miller, farmer, 38, married to Sarah J., 32, with children, Bradford, 5, Alvan W. , 3, and Sarah A, 1. There is also a John Miller, 50, a Farmer married to Mahala, 48, with a son William, 18. This may be the John Miller that was living next to Ogden in the 1840 census when he gave his age as between 30 and 40, his wife's between 20 and 30 and a daughter under 5. There is a notation of a Lorinda Miller for Titus V. Miller 68 431.

There is a Marion Miller Gilchrist buried at the West Charlton (also called Scott Church Cemetery) cemetery. Check 1850/1860/1870 census. She was born 18 June 1814 and died 11 August 1879. She married Robert Gilchrist, born 14 September 1806 and died 12 January 1874.

The 1877 Atlas for Charlton Township gives a J. Miller, A. Conde, T. M. Gilchrist, A. Gilchrist, J. B. Gilchrist, J. M. Gilchrist, R. Gilchrist (just north of West Charlton)

Death date for Ogden and wife Rachel comes from the Fosburgh Cemetery, Charlton - 15 names, 12 stones.

Per the 1879 C. Durkee cemetery report - "The foregoing inscriptions are from stones in a walled enclosure a few rods north of the main road in the little hamlet of Blue Corners, and directly across from the Episcopal cemetery. They were copied October 3rd 1878 by Edward D. Harris." In 1998 the wall is gone, and the cemetery is cow pasture. Few stones remain, and of those that do, all but 1 or 2 are down.
