Our Family Genealogy [3]

BIRTH: Date of birth is an approximation.
MAR: A wife Katherine is mentioned in his will, below.
DEATH: No death/bur rec found. See the will of John Miller of Bishops Stortford, 14 Jun 1551, proved 13 Feb 1554/5, Commissary Court of the Bishop of London (Essex & Herts), reg wills, 1:30 (FHL #094219).
NOTE: John Miller may have had five daughters. John's son John mentioned five sisters in his 1584 will but does not name them. Since John Miller Sr mentions no daughters in his will, it seems more likely that they are daughters of his wife, Katherine, by a previous marriage.

Miller-16022 and Miller-1303 appear to represent the same person because: They are clearly the same person. They should be merged into one profile.

Clayton,

These profiles are not confirmed as being the same person, as there are two distinct family groups. As research into these profile groups is still in process, please do not propose a merge until a more definite answer can be given; it will be easier to unentangle the families if these two remain separate.

Thank you,

Sarah

Miller-1303 and Miller-16022 do not represent the same person because: John Miller 1303 only has one listed spouse as Katherine. I believe these profiles have been conflated. MIller-1303 will be disconnected from the shared spouse of Miller-16022. Remand to PM for further research.

After initially re-proposing a merge on this profile, I dug in a little deeper and there are problems for a variety of reasons. I think this is a case of import error, bringing erroneous information into the WikiTree profile and conflating it. I have found nothing in any of the sources available about an Alice as a wife of this John Miller of Herts., or as a mother of the children listed as assigned to her. As John's daughters aren't listed in his will, its hard to pin those down, but the sons are clearly the children of Katherine, and not an Alice.

I think Alice is a fragmentary piece of information that was improperly attached to someone's Ancestry tree, and then ported in with gedcom data.

Separately, I've been reviewing the sources listed on the various pages linked for this profile, and there are some very problematic ones linked. I suggest a review of the sources and a reconciliation of the data in them with the profile header and the biography, as there is a high level of variance.

For instance: under the Family source profile, there are several linked Ancestry.com references. Opening two record links relating to marriage, https://search.ancestry.com/collections/7836/records/834604 and https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/2470486:1624?ti=0&indiv=try&gss=pt, the first is merely an index link with no further data or imagery to view to confirm, and the second is for a marriage that takes place in a completely different location after the date of death listed for this individual; the only unifying information being that one happens to be a John Miller and the spouse happens to be named Katherine.

Hi Sarah, Can you tell me what sources you used to disconnect the profile for the other wife? All of the sources listed are from family trees and not reliable Pre-1700 sources. The Ancestry sources are not reliable if you look at the original source it tells you they were created from several user trees and family group sheets. If you have verifiable sources please add them.

Thanks, Laura

Laura,

I’m in the middle of an internet outage and can’t do any work on my computer right now, but I am in progress of getting this tangle resolved with sources.

And, 100%, as you highlighted, all of the ancestry sources have been varied and unreliable, and are just breadcrumbs at best. A few have links to records that look promising though, but I’m still working through them.

Essentially, the will for John Miller of Herts lists his wife, Katherine LNAB Unknown, two sons, William the elder and John the younger, and references daughters but does not name them. The will of his son William references his brother John and his sisters, but again does not name them. The locality on the tangled up profiles bounces between Herts and Essex, and there is no evidence of an Essex connection with the John Miller in question. So, I am disconnecting the relatives not verified by the wills and with the wrong locality, as I believe identical names and similar date ranges just got squished together. It looks like the Essex group has a rather experienced WikiTree-er working on it, so hopefully they can be of assistance as well.

Hopefully the internet will be back up tomorrow - we’ve got the wind remnants of Hurricane Zeta still causing hiccups here. But I hope to have everything up posthaste.

Thanks again! I always appreciate your feedback and knowledge ☺️

Hi Sarah,

Thank you, for taking the time to try to sort these profiles out. I found some of the same things that you did. The time that you are putting into correcting these is very much appreciated. I was not trying to rush you, I was just wondering.

Thank you for responding!
