Harmon served as a Sergeant under Captain Francis P. Gates in the Volunteer Third Regiment of Ohio Cavalry. He enrolled August 20, 1861to serve three years. He was discharged October 3, 1864 at Columbia,Tennesse e. (Source: original papers).
