Biography

This is the profile for Mary Milton, the mother of Mary Maugridge, wife of George Boone III and grandmother of Daniel Boone.

Parentage of Mary Maugridge

Two pieces of evidence support the proposition that the mother of Mary Maugridge was named Mary Milton:

  • A family record included in the records of the Exeter monthly meetings of the Society of Friends in Berks, Pennsylvania, which state that the maiden name of the wife of George Boone was Mary Maugridge, that she was born in 1669 and that her parents were named John Maugridge and Mary Milton.[1] An image of the record is attached to this profile.
  • A family genealogy written by James Boone, based on the remembrances of John Boone, a son of George Boone and Mary (Maugridge) Boone, which states that Mary Maugridge was born in Bradnich in 1669 and that she was the daughter of John Maugridge and Mary Milton.[2] An image of the relevant portion of the record is attached to this profile.

Date and Place of Birth

Mary Milton's date and place of birth are uncertain. As of July 2020, the Find-A-Grave page for Mary states that she was born on January 6, 1646 in Bradninch, Devonshire,[3] while the Geni.com page for Mary states that she was born on October 25, 1648.[4] However, no reliable evidence supporting either assertion is provided or been found.

Based on daughter Mary's date of baptism (sometime in Easter 1668 - Easter 1669), it is likely that her mother, Mary Milton, was born no later than 1650. Based on daughter Jane's date of baptism (5 April 1686), Mary was probably born no earlier than 1645. It is therefore likely that Mary Milton was born sometime in 1645-1650, with about 1647 being a reasonably midpoint estimate. Since John Maugridge/Moggridge (and presumably his wife Mary Milton) had children born in Bradninch, Devonshire, it is likely that Mary Milton was born near Bradninch. However, since no records for any Miltons have been found in the bishop's transcripts of the Bradninch parish register (which are fragmentary), it is probable that she was not born in Bradninch itself.

A search in July 2020 on familysearch.org, ancestry.com and findmypast.com for records for a Mary Milton (or variants thereof) born in Devonshire in 1640-1655 found only the following record: Mary Milton, daughter of Richard Milton, baptized on September 20, 1646 in Clayhanger, Devonshire, which is about 14 miles north of Bradninch[5] It is therefore reasonably plausible, but not certain, that this baptismal record relates to this profile's Mary Milton and that she was baptized on Seone of these records relates to this profile's Mary Milton.

Parentage

Mary's parentage has not been determined.

Some online genealogy pages (including, as of July 2020, the Geni.com page for Mary[4]) state that Mary was the daughter of John Milton, the poet. That claim is, however, not supported by any evidence and is disproven by the fact that John Milton's daughter Mary lived in London and died unmarried.[6] On 22 February 1675, John Milton's daughter Mary signed a settlement with his widow for the settlement of his estate. She was living in London and was single at the time.[7]

Other online genealogy pages say that Mary was the daughter of Richard Melton who supposedly emigrated to Jamestown, Virginia. That claim is clearly specious, as (1) Richard Melton was supposedly from Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, which is hundreds of mile from Bradninch, (2) there is no evidence connecting Richard Melton to any Milton in or near Bradninch and (3) the records relating to Richard Melton of Jamestown show that he emigrated to Virginia by 1620-1624, long before Mary Milton was born in England.

Marriage

No record of the marriage of John Moggridge/Maugridge and Mary Milton has been found in the bishop's transcripts of the Bradninch parish registers or through a July 2020 search on online databases on familysearch.org, findmypast.com or ancestry.com. Based on the date of their daughter Mary's date of baptism (Easter 1668 - Easter 1669) and their daughter Jane's date of baptism (April 1686), they were probably married about 1667. Since their children were born in Bradninch, they were probably married in or near Bradninch. The bishop's transcripts of the Bradninch parish registers are missing marriage records for 1665-1668.

As of July 2020, the gen.com page for husband John Moggridge/Maugridge suggests that John may have had a prior wife, but confusing says that both the woman he married in 1652 and the woman he married in 1667 were Mary Milton.[8]

Children

The bishop's transcripts of the Bradninch parish registers show that John and (presumably Mary) had the following children:

  1. Mary, bpt. sometime in Easter 1668 - Easter 1669 in Bradninch, m. 1689 George Boone in Bradninch, d. Exeter, Berks County, 2 April 1740 in Pennsylvania. (See discussion and sources in Mary's profile.)
  2. William, bur. 16 October 1678 in Bradninch[9] (As of July 2020, the geni.com page for husband John Maugridge suggests that William was the son of John and a prior wife.)[8]
  3. Joseph, bpt. 21 September 1678 in Bradninch[10]
  4. Jane, bpt. 5 April 1686 in Bradninch[11]

Death

Some online genealogy pages say that Mary died on August 21, 1697.[4] No evidence supporting that date, however, has been found. There is a record in the bishop's transcripts of the Bradninch parish registers of the burial of Marie Moggridge in Bradninch on January 20, 1690/1,[12] which may well relate to the burial of this profile's Mary (Milton) Moggridge.

Research Notes

The Bradninch Parish Registers do not seem to be available anywhere except at the South West Heritage Trust. Familysearch.org has no parish registers prior to 1818. The bishop's transcripts, which are available online, are very spotty and missing many years.

Milton-1332 and Milton-18 do not represent the same person because: proven different women

The merger added a new son, John. However, no Bradnich baptism record for him has been found and he was married in Bratton Fleming, 30 miles from Bradnich. There were lots of other Maugridge's around. Eg there are records of the baptisms of John Mogridges in Molland, Devon in 1667 and Lynton, Devon in 1669, both of which towns are closer to Bratton Fleming than Bradnich is. Seems more likely that "son" John was one of those.

I think it is time to remove the parents from this profile. There is no proof, and many trees on the internet have a different set of parents. There is more than one Mary who was born to a "Richard".

Robin - I wholeheartedly agree. There is no reliable evidence as to who her parents were, but it seems certain they were not a Richard Milton born in Leicestershire who emigrated to Virginia and a Margaret Ross born in Scotland, who was the daughter of a Scottish nobleman. Both connections are totally fanciful and produce fake connections to the poet John Milton (one one side) and to Scottish royalty (on the other side - eg there are 14 lines from Margaret Ross of Scotland that go back to Robert the Bruce). This profile should be project protected to prevent reattachment, because it is certain that the fake parents will be repeated reattached. OK if I build out the profile more to discuss what is supported and what is not supported and no doubt fake?

I don't think the pedigree for Mary Maugridge should be withdrawn because some people don't like the contributor's conclusions or reasoning. I found the pedigree that was offered well reasoned.

I do appreciate Chase's summary of the controversy, which is missing above.

Milton-274 and Milton-18 appear to represent the same person because: same name, married same person, both shown as mother of Mary that became part of the Boone family
