Biography

Genealogically Defined

Birth

Asher Miner (also spelled Minor) was born on 30 Jan 1772, to Mary Page, the first wife of Thomas Miner, in the part of Stonington, that officially became North Stonington in 1807.[1][2][3] Asher was their third listed child.

Birth Research Notes

Some records indicate that Asher was born in North Stonington[3], however, North Stonington, though established in 1724, was not officially North Stonington until 1807.[4]
While Barbour has Asher born under the last name of Miner/Minor, and has been interpreted on Ancestry.com to be Minor, the spelling in the Connecticut Vital Records has his last name at birth as Miner. Some family members disagree as to how the last name was spelled.

Marriage

Asher married Lucy Spalding on 28 Nov 1790, in Stonington; the ceremony was performed by Elder Simeon Brown.[1][2][3] They had at least 12 children:

Children

  3. Martha "Patty" (Miner) Brown (aka Minor); b. 12 Feb 1795 [1][2],[3][7]
  4. Anna (Minor) Holmes (aka Miner); b. 4 Jun 1797[1][2][3][8]

  7. Lucy G. Miner; b. 7 Nov 1804; d. 18 Jul 1810[1][2][3][11][12]
  8. Jedediah R. Miner; b. 23 Sep 1806[1][2][3][13]

Children Notes
1) None of the children that died young, with the exception of Lucy G. Miner have their birth recorded in Barbour.
2) The children mentioned in 1) are not listed in "History of Stonington.[1]
3) Only the first two children (Russell and the Infant Son) are NOT listed in Thomas Minor Descendants.[3]
4) Martha "Patty" (Miner) Brown (aka Minor) is listed in the Barbour Collection and Vital Records of Connecticut as Patty, not Martha.[2][19]
5) The first Lucy, that was born in 1802, is listed as being born 30 Jan 1802 and "died young" in Thomas Minor Descendants, however, with their no record of her birth and the inscription on her tombstone stating that she was 7 months old at the time of her death on 13 Dec 1802, she would have to have been born in May 1802, (exact date unknown).[3]
6) John Irish Miner is listed in the Barbour Collection as John J. This could be a typo in the Collection.[2]
7) Hannah A. (Miner) Shannon is listed in the Barbour Collection and in Thomas Minor Descendants as Hannah M.[2][3]

This person may or may not be a child of Reverend Asher Miner and Lucy Spalding:

William Miner, b. 8 Sep 1815 [Note gestational conflict; existence of this person as a child of these parents is uncertain]; d. 2 Aug 1820

Profession

Reverend Asher Miner was Baptist Pastor of the North Stonington Parish.[3]

Death

Asher Miner died 1 Sep 1836, at North Stonington, Connecticut. His grave is in Union Cemetery, North Stonington.[3][20]

Miner-1186 and Minor-295 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles represent the same person, who was the spouse of Lucy Spalding. As for the Miner/Minor surname spelling discrepancy, there are hundreds of those running throughout the Wikitree system. Probably it will never be resolved to the satisfaction of everyone, but meanwhile the consensus has been to put in Miner as the surname with Minor as an a.k.a. name. Sufficient time has passed to permit G2G consultation, hence the merge should now proceed.

Minor-295 and Miner-1186 are not ready to be merged because: There is and has been among Minor/Miner family members a disagreement on how the last name should be spelled (with an "o" or an "e"). Not sure why this merge didn't already auto merge after 30 days, but need time to have a discussion with the profile manager of the spelling with an "e" before a final decision is made as to which way this merge should go.
