James was the son of J. R. Mitchell and Elizabeth Franklin. [1] He was married to Mary E. C. Jordan on 25 Apr 1860 in Campbell County, Virginia. [2]

James' certificate of death was filled out by someone that didn't have a lot of information and it is actually filed under the name "John R. Mitchell".
