Beryl,

The name is far too common in Maine to jump to assumptions without some documentation connecting the dots. My question - Is there any "historical documentation" to connect the N.Yarmoth/China man to Machias at any time or to the regiment? I found no pension record for the man that served in Alden's regiment. He was a Continental, so would be eligible for a pension in 1818. The China man died in 1820. Is there evidence of a pension application or perhaps a bounty land warrant that connects the China man to the service record of this man? I found none when I did this research, but that was many years ago. There could be more out there today. I would love to see this man get an identity, but I like to stick to facts. I believe it is disrespectful to his service if we don't take the time to make sure we get it right.

I don't understand who updated this to refer to the Regiment as militia. This was a Massachusetts Continental Line containing soldiers that served 1 to 3 year terms under harsh conditions. A number of men in this regiment lost their lives. They all deserve to be honored correctly.

Please don't make undocumented changes that disrespect these soldiers and their sacrifice - they are the original Patriots!

Nancy, I searched about to try to id his regiment and rank. I inserted the link to Col. Alden's id. Also inserted updated link to your source of Maine Men of the 6th.

I decided to update his 1776 sticker with rank "drummer."

An ancestry tree (seems to) shows him as a son of Mitchell-5722 whose profile does state Machias as a place... Lists David as Birth July 31, 1762 North Yarmouth, Cumberland, Maine, Death 1820 China, Kennebec, Maine, and that his wife was Rebecca Ward 1777-1847
