Biography

This person is an ancestor of President H.W. Bush and President George W. Bush [1]

Elizabeth Mitchell, the first child of Experience Mitchell and Jane Cooke Mitchell was born in Plymouth, Plymouth Colony about 1629.[2] Some sources give a date of August 27, 1628. No contemporary record is available to confirm the exact date. Elizabeth was the granddaughter of Mayflower Pilgrim Francis Cooke.

Elizabeth married John Washburn in Plymouth on 6 Dec ember 1645.[3] He was probably the one baptized in Bengeworth, Worcestershire, England on 28 November 1621 son of John and Margaret (Moore) Washburn.[2] On 06 November 1664, John Washburne Junr. acknowledged sale of land given him by his father Experience Mitchell.[4]

John and Elizabeth were among the original settlers of what is referred to today as "Old Bridgewater". They settled in the area that is today the central portion of the town. "Old Bridgewater" was officially incorporated in 1656.

Elizabeth died between 01 November 1681 and 05 December 1684.[2] She died before her father, and thus was not mentioned in his will. When and where exactly is not known, and neither is her place of burial. After her death, John married Elizabeth (Unknown) Packard, the widow of Samuel Packard. They married between 07 November 1685 and before 30 October 1686.[5]

John died in Bridgewater on 12 November 1686.[6] He left a will dated 30 October 1686, and presented 08 Jun 1687, in which he named wife Elizabeth, sons John, Thomas, Joseph, Samuel, Jonathan, Benjamin, and James, daughters Mary, Elizabeth, Jane and Sarah. He calls James and Sarah his two younger children. The inventory of his estate provides his death date.[7]

They had 11 children born Duxbury and Bridgewater, order uncertain, but all named in father's will:[2][7]

  1. John Washburn, b. about 1646, based on age at death
  2. Thomas Washburn, b. say 1649
