Biography

James was born before 1715 and died after 31 Aug 1772, the date his will was written in Amelia, Virginia:

Will Book 2, p. 139, dated 31 Aug 1772, no probate date. James MITCHELL, sons-John, James, Daniel and William. Grandaughter - Sarah Anderson Hurt, daughter of Joel Hurt (under 18) He did not name a wife or daughters. He left his sons land in Amelia Co. and Pr. Edward Co. [1] [2]

James may have been married to a Sarah who is mentioned in a deed of 1746, or this could be a second James.

However, in 1747 he is listed as being married to Ann Cocke, the daughter of James Powell Cocke:
5 Oct 1747. Amelia County, VA, Deed Book 3, p. 73. James Cocks, heir and executor of James Powell Cocke, late of Henrico Co., dec'd, to James MITCHELL and Ann, his now wife, daughter of James Powell Cocke . . . 999 acres. [3]

18 Jun 1754. Amelia County, VA, Deed Book 5, p. 169. James MITCHELL and Ann, his wife, to Edmund Booker, Jr . . . whereas an agreement between James Powell Cocke, father of Ann, late of Henrico Co., VA, dec'd . . . 99 acres Flat Creek and five slaves. [4]

24 Apr 1769. Amelia County, VA, Deed Book 11, p. 53. James MITCHELL and John MITCHELL and Elizabeth, his wife, to Bartley Baugh . . . 130 pounds . . . 224 acres both sides Elliss's Fork, adjoining Bartolomew Dupuy, Moses Overton, William Pulam, William Hurt, and Isaac Webb. Wit: Anderson MITCHELL, James Foster, Priscilla MITCHELL and James MITCHELL, Jr. [5]
