Zachariah Mitchell was born in 1805 in North Carolina.
Zachariah was living in Surry County, North Carolina in 1850.[1] He was forty-nine years old, per the census, and working as a Farmer.[1] Zachariah could not read or write, and owned no real property.[1] Lucinda stayed home and took care of the children, which ranged from ages two to fifteen (seven children total).[1] Zachariah and Lucinda added Josephus and Marcus to the family over the next four years bringing their family total to twelve people.[2]
By 1860 Zachariah (55) was working as a Farmer in Greene County, Tennessee.[2] He owned no real estate and $100 of personal estate.[2] Lucinda (40) was kept busy taking care of the home and family.[2] Zachariah, Lucinda and their children Oden (23) and Julina (20) were all listed as being over the age of twenty and unable to read or write.[2] Louisa (18), Evan (17), James (14), Polly (12), Sarah (10), Josephus (8) and Marcus (6) all stayed at home.[2] As none of them attended school,[2] it is likely they also could not read or write.
There is an alternate death date for Zachariah of 27 Sep 1863 in Dunklin, Missouri (from a descendants family book).
Possible final child: Elizabeth F Mitchell born 1862
I looked for Zachariah in the 1840 census. He doesn't appear in North Carolina. There are six Zachariah Mitchells indexed: Tennessee, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee. He moved from North Carolina to Tennessee between 1840 and 1842. He would have been thirty-five years old with a wife and one or more children if one of the Tennessee census records are his.
Hawkins, Tennessee: 1 male 5-10, 1 male 20-30, 2 female <5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 20-30
Hardin, Tennessee: 1 male <5, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 15-20
Lauderdale, Tennessee: 1 male <5, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 30-40, 2 female <5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 30-40
If the Lauderdale census is his (the age is right for him) Then Aden would be the young male, Julina would be one of the young females, and there would be three more daughters age 0-15 and another son/nephew age 10-15.
1850 in Tennessee
Note: The Zachariah that was in Lauderdale, Tennessee died in 1875, see FindAGrave memorial #125854682
