MR. T. S. MITCHELL.[4]
Mr. Thomas Shapton Mitchell, a pioneer of the Hawkesbury district, died at Western Suburbs Hospital on Monday. Mr. Mitchell was born at Lower Portland on July 21, 1860. In his early days he was prominent in sport, and took a leading part in organising cricket clubs in the district. For the past 40 years, Mr. Mitchell had been in business in the Municipal Fruit Market and was one the industry's oldest active members. He is survived by Mrs. Mitchell, a son and three daughters. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the remains being interred in the Methodist section of the Rookwood Cemetery.
MR. T. S. MITCHELL.[5]
One of the oldest members of the Enfield Church, in the person of Thomas Shapton Mitchell, passed away on 24th June, after a brief illness. The late Mr. Mitchell was born at Lower Portland, on the Hawkesbury River, and from earliest childhood was associated with Sunday School and Church in that area. On his marriage in 1886, he went, to live at Sackville Reach, and for a number of years was connected with the church in that centre. He became a local preacher and served in this capacity with great acceptance for many years. In 1901 he removed to Sydney, and linked himself up with the work at Wesley Church, Chippendale. During the ministry of Rev. J. A. Waddell, at Mount Lachlan, Mr. Mitchell was invited to act as superintendent of the Mount Lachlan Sunday School in succession to Mr. Joseph Medcalf. He accepted the invitation, and transferred his membership to the Mount Lachlan Church. For a number of years he conducted a young men's Bible Class, and many men to-day pay tribute to his work and his influence, through that class, on their lives. When the South Sydney Mission was formed, Mr. Mitchell became the senior circuit steward. After a brief return to Sackville, Mr. Mitchell settled in the Burwood Circuit, residing at Sunbeam Avenue, Burwood, and attending the Enfield Church. For a term he occupied the position of circuit steward. On several occasions he has been been a representative to Conference. There are very few positions in the church open to a layman Mr. Mitchell has not filled at some time or other in his life. In his decease another link with the past has been broken. After a brief illness he passed suddenly and peacefully to his reward on 24th June. Apart from his church interests, Mr. Mitchell was keenly interested in several forms of sport. He was a keen cricketer, being particularly proud of the fact that on several occasions he captained a 'Mitchell's' team in matches in the Hawkesbury River district. He was an active tennis player till within a few months of his decease. In 1886 he married Augusta Emily Hanigan, of Shoalhaven, and of this union there were four daughters and one son. The eldest daughter died at an early age. His wife died some years ago, and he later re-married. He is survived by the widow, Mrs. T. S. Mitchell; Mrs. C. W. Hobson, of Grafton; Mrs. H. J. Horsburgh, of Beckom; Mrs. F. S. Rudd, of Harden (daughters), Mr. R. Mitchell, of Canterbury (son), and Mr. Roy Richards (step-son).
