Myth 01- A 1905 'The Huntington Herald 'newspaper sketch on Elijah Mitchell it states "Of his life it has been gleaned that he first saw the light of day in Ireland in 1761" without supporting documentation. Elijah Mitchell's 1832 Preble County, OH Revolutionary War pension application has the following text: Deponent was born somewhere in the State of Virginia according to the best information which he can obtain on this sixth day of March 1761, but has no written record of his age. As the pension statement was by Elijah Mitchell himself it carries greater weight than a newspaper sketch written in 1905.
