Charles Mitchell was born in 1865 at Bolton, Lancashire, the son of James Mitchell and Ann Mitchell formerly Smith. [1]
He was baptised on 23 April 1865 at St. Peter, Bolton-le-Moors. His parents were then living at Great Bolton and father James was a metal and machine broker. [2]
In the 1871 census the Mitchell family was living at 39 Newport St, Bolton. Father James, aged 52, was a metal and machine broker employing 2 men. Mother Ann was also aged 52. Brother's William, aged 31, and Enoch, aged 21, were working with their father. Ephraim, aged 19, was an engine fitter. Simeon was aged 15, Reubin [sic] aged 13, Amelia aged 11 and James aged 9. Charles was aged 6. [3]
In 1881 Charles was living with his widowed mother and siblings at 39 Cheapside. He was aged 16 and still at school. [4]
Charles Mitchell married Sarah Ann Howl on 19 June 1886 at the parish church of Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire. Their marriage certificate recorded Charles was a bachelor aged 21 and an engineer. His father was named as James Mitchell, an engineer, deceased. Sarah was a spinster aged 21. Her father was named as Thomas Howl, a forgeman. At the time of their marriage Charles was residing at 39 Cheapside and Sarah at 122 Blackhorse St. Their witnesses were James Mitchell and Harriet Mitchell, Charles' brother and his wife. [5]
This couple had 3 children named Ethel born 6 June 1886, Nellie born 23 August 1888 and Charles Herbert Cyril Mitchell born 24 August 1898.
Daughter Ethel Mitchell Howl was baptised on 4 July 1886 at St. Peter, Bolton-le-Moors, the daughter of Sarah Ann Howl, of Great Bolton. She was born before her parents were married but her birth registration names both parents.
Daughter Nellie Mitchell was baptised on 30 September 1888 at the same church. Charles and Sarah were living at Great Bolton and Charles was a general dealer.
Son Charles Herbert Cyril Mitchell was baptised on 19 October 1898 at the same church. The family was then living at 107 Westbrook St and Charles was an iron broker. [6]
In the 1891 census the family was living at 107 Westbrook St, Bolton. Charles, aged 26, was a general dealer. Sarah was aged 25. Ethel was aged 4 and Nellie aged 2. [7]
In 1901 the family was at the same address. Charles, aged 26, was a general merchant, working on his own account. Sarah was aged 35. Ethel was aged 14, Nellie aged 12 and Charles aged 2 years. [8]
In 1911 the family was at the same address. Charles was a produce merchant and an employer. Sarah was aged 45. Ethel was aged 24, no employment recorded; Nellie was aged 22 and a student and Charles was aged 12 and still at school. [9]
The family then moved to Southport, Lancashire.
Charles Mitchell died in 1915 aged 50 years. [10]

Sarah Ann Mitchell died in 1927 aged 61 years. [12]
