Elijah "Ella" Mitchell was born Jan 07, 1828 in McMinnville, Warren County, Tenn. to parents James M. Mitchell and Margaret "Martha" Jane McGregor. He came from a large family of Scottish heritage. He married Margaret R Shipley (1828-1870) about 1847 in Missouri. They had 9 children, 5 girls and 4 boys. Margaret died near Berryville Arkinsas April 21, 1870. His mother passed away Feb 22 1872 in greenfield, Dade County, Missouri. He married Cynthia Ann Adeline (Morton) Hurt,a widow herself, Feb 10,1875 in Bell, Texas, where they lived until he passed away. This marriage produced 5 children, 3 girls and 2 boys. Cynthia also had 2 living children by her deceased husband, Finas Ervin Hurt (1838-1873) that were under the age of 10 that came with her when she married Elijah. This left at least 12 children under the age of 16 to be raised by both Cynthia and Elijah at this time. On April 27, 1883 a tornado struck the family home and the chimney dropped ontop of Elijah, killing him. He is presumed to have been buried at the Hill Cemetery, Midway, Texas between Temple and Belton in Bell county. Later estimates by Meteorologists rated the tornado as a F-4. Cynthia was also injured permanently by this same tornado. Unfortunately, Elijah's grave may be unmarked.
