Disputed Wife

(quote from American Ancestors - Great Migration Project by Anderson.) "DAVID MITCHELL, bp. Halifax 14 Novemer 1619; m. by an unknown date to Elizabeth _____ (in his will of 11 March 1685/6, he made his wife Elizabeth sole executrix. (Elizabeth Grave, daughter of George Grave of Hartford married a Mitchell, but her husband was John Mitchell of Hartford. Some secondary sources state that David married 'Sarah, daughter of Thomas Wheeler of Milford.' Thomas Wheeler of Milford (and his wife Joan Bryan to differentiate from Thomas Wheeler and Anne Halsey also of Connecticut who's daughter Sarah married Thomas Sherwood Jr) did not have a daughter Sarah, but his son, John did have a daughter Sarah who married Abraham Mitchell son of David, which may have been the cause of the confusion.)"[1]

Therefore from this source, Sarah Wheeler should be disconnected from David Mitchell.

Research Notes

The sentence below was included in the original profile without sources:

David Mitchell was born in England and Immigrated to the New England American Colony of Connecticut. He married Sarah Wheeler in 1653 and they were married for about 15 years when she died at the age of 41 in 1669.

Anderson in "Great Migration" lists the secondary sources which claimed David's wife was Sarah Wheeler. The first was "Wethersfield hist 2:505" i.e. " The history of ancient Wethersfield etc." by Henry Reed Stiles.[3] Stiles cites several books for Mitchell genealogy and clearly means the same family as this profile since he lists several of David Mitchell's children and their spouses. But, he simply states David's wife was Sarah Wheeler without specific primary sources and clearly did not know of David's will wherein he listed wife Elizabeth so was provably lacking in knowledge of David Mitchell specifically.

Stiles cites Cothen "History of ancient Woodbury, CT" (https://archive.org/details/historyofancient02coth/page/n8/mode/2up?) ; Orcutt "History of Stratford, CT" (https://archive.org/details/historyofoldtown01orcu/page/242/mode/2up) which have been examined and say nothing of the wife of David Mitchell; he also cites "Foote Genealogy" without stating what book or author is being referenced (presumably he did not mean the 1907 work by Nathaniel Foote since Stiles himself published in 1904). In summary, Stiles' work can be discounted as a source for Sarah Wheeler as wife of David Mitchell.

Anderson also references NYGBR 120:99 i.e. "The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record" containing the article "English Origins of the Mitchell, Wood, Lum and Halstead Families". The article says that David, son of Matthew Mitchell married Sarah Wheeler, daughter of Thomas Wheeler of Milford. Anderson also discounted this source as reliable re: Sarah Wheeler as wife of David Mitchell.

Finally, Sarah Wheeler proposed as wife of David Mitchell has no sources on her profile for this marriage other than an unsourced FindAGrave page and an unsourced entry on the notoriously unreliable web page "Our Royal, Titled, Noble, and Commoner Ancestors & Cousins (over 193,000 names)." Royal Ancestors with a citation of "Unknown author, Family Records."

David Mitchell was the father of Martha Mitchell, who married Nathaniel Baldwin, sometime after July 1, 1685 (date of Henry Botsfords will, in which he mentions his son-n-law Nathaniel Baldwin and the four children he had with his daughter); Martha did in 1691.[4]

There are numerous quality secondary sources that show that Sarah Wheeler, daughter of Thomas Wheeler, was the spouse of David Mitchell. However Anderson reports that this is incorrect, and Torrey shows David's first wife as unnamed. What is certain is that David Mitchell married and had children, and that his widow was Elizabeth. Her last name was unknown, but she was not Elizabeth Grave, per Anderson.

Has anyone researched whether any of the children's birth records list a mother? If we can ascertain that, we can perhaps make a more informed conclusion as to whether Elizabeth was the mother of some or all of the children, or whether an unnamed mother perhaps was the mother of some or all of them.

I'm going through the children now and so far, no record of the mother.

Sarah Wheeler-1198 should, I believe, be merged into Sarah Wheeler-714 who was actually the daughter of Thomas Wheeler and Anne Halsey and married Thomas Sherwood Jr (she died as Sherwood's wife in 1659 so was provably not married to David Mitchell; further there are actual sources for Sarah as wife of Thomas Sherwood). This merge was proposed and rejected in 2018, I don't know on what basis but unless I find something contrary I intend to re-propose it. That doesn't help identify Elizabeth but I wanted to note it here while researching.

Yes, Wheeler-714 is the daughter of Thomas Wheeler and Ann Halsey, married Thomas Sherwood. Added additional sources to her profile and PGM as the family was in Concord by 1637.

Thanks for looking at the NYGBR article; did it offer any sources or rationale for stating that David Mitchell married Sarah Wheeler? Or did it also mention David's known wife Elizabeth? It would be good to know if there is anything of substance behind the assertion.

No, it doesn't show any citations for that information, and doesn't list wife Elizabeth. There were some corrections for the article, published in volume 124 (1993), but they didn't address his wife. The clarification for him was only about being included in his father's will.

The unsourced wife "Sarah Wheeler" still needs to be detached from this profile. I put a note on her profile so I'm hoping the PMs will take care of this.

His actual wife was Elizabeth Unknown. she should be attached. subscription Then the profile should be PPPd by the Puritan Great Migration Project to protect the relationship.

Hi PMs,

I'm working with the Puritan Great Migration Project to clean up the profiles of the Wood/Mitchell/Butterfield families. Please note the source and the research notes I placed on this profile. According to this research, Sarah Wheeler should be disconnected as the wife of David Mitchell. His wife should be Elizabeth Unknown.

Thanks.
