Captain Thomas Mitchell, yeoman, of New Shoreham, Colony of Rhode Island, was born in about 1660. He was the son of Thomas Mitchell the hatter. The identity of his mother is unknown.[1]
The location of his family in 1660 (and therefore the location of his birth) are unknown. However, by 8 January 1677/8, his father appears in the town records of New Shoreham (Block Island), Colony of Rhode Island.[1]
This younger Thomas Mitchell married Margaret (___), possibly Margaret Rathbone, prior to 1682. However, the identity of his wife Margaret is uncertain as explained in the Research Notes below.[1]
Captain Thomas Mitchell appears several times in the town records of New Shoreham, Province of Rhode Island, between 1686 and his death in about 1740:[2]
He had numerous land transactions. In addition, he conveyed property to his sons: Thomas Mitchell of Boston, cheesmonger, 232 acres; George Mitchell of New Shoreham 140 acres; Joseph Mitchell of North Kingston; and Benjamin Mitchell of Newport, hatter.[3]
The last record of this Thomas Mitchell in the New Shoreham town records is dated 19 April 1738. He likely died not long after that, possible in about 1740.[3]
Children of Thomas Mitchell and, probably, Margaret (___), include:[4]
Thomas and his wife Margaret witnessed the marriage of Job Card and Margery Tosh on 28 May 1716. On 9 Feb 1727/8 she deposed to the marriage, about 1717 of John Green and Mary Rathbone. She may be the daughter of John and Margaret Rathbone. She may also have been a second wife and the mother of Benjamin and Margaret only.

This Thomas Mitchell of New Shorem appears to be a contemporary and a completely different person from the Thomas Mitchell that married Mary Moulton and died 1 Sep 1709 in Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts. According to the Book Genealogies of Rhode Island Families, Vol. 1- The Thomas Mitchell of New Shorem, that died bef. the 6th of May 1687 was the father of these children:
This was the actual father and the correct Thomas Mitchell NOT the Thomas Mitchell that married Mary Moulton and died 1 Sep 1709 in Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts. More Research is Necessary, BUT it looks like at this point that Thomas Mitchell that married Mary Moultan needs to be removed.
