Captain Thomas Mitchell, yeoman, of New Shoreham, Colony of Rhode Island, was born in about 1660. He was the son of Thomas Mitchell the hatter. The identity of his mother is unknown.[1]

This younger Thomas Mitchell married Margaret (___), possibly Margaret Rathbone, prior to 1682. However, the identity of his wife Margaret is uncertain as explained in the Research Notes below.[1]

This is definitely not Thomas Mitchell married to Margaret who has these children. The profile for that Thomas is Mitchell-315. There are two options here. This Thomas can be removed from these parents and merged with Mitchell-315 or since he is a legitimate person with the wrong attachments, we can move the wife and children to the other profile Mitchell-315. Managers, please state a preference. I suppose there is a third option, we could switch the parents and bios on the two profiles. If I hear nothing, I'll switch the parents.

Here is something that needs to be discussed, The Real parents of Capt. Thomas Mitchell, who married Margaret Rathbone. Who were his real parents. In the Book: "Genealogies of Rhode Island Families, Vol. I" page 705. It says this: "1. Thomas Mitchell, of Block Island, Hatter, died Prior to 6 May 1687, when in the inventory of John Williams of Newport filed in the Suffolk County (Mass.) Probate Court, are listed 20 Sheep at Block Island, in the Keeping of the Executors of Thomas Mitchell, running on said island (Suffolk Probate Records, Book 10, fo. 341). The name of Wife is Unknown.

This Thomas Mitchell of New Shorem appears to be a contemporary and a completely different person from the Thomas Mitchell that married Mary Moulton and died 1 Sep 1709 in Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts. According to the Book Genealogies of Rhode Island Families, Vol. 1- The Thomas Mitchell of New Shorem, that died bef. the 6th of May 1687 was the father of these children:

  • 1. Capt. Thomas Mitchell, b. abt. 1660
  • 2. John Mitchel, b. abt. 1664
  • 3. Joseph, b. abt. 1669
  • 4. Probably several daughters

This was the actual father and the correct Thomas Mitchell NOT the Thomas Mitchell that married Mary Moulton and died 1 Sep 1709 in Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts. More Research is Necessary, BUT it looks like at this point that Thomas Mitchell that married Mary Moultan needs to be removed.

I believe this Thomas is attached to the wrong parents. Unfortunately the parents do not currently exist on Wikitree, but I'm working on it.
