Alexander was the eldest son of Bethia Brown and Andrew Mitchell. He was baptised at the Dunbeth Relief Church in Coatbridge, on March 17, 1844. Alexander was employed as an Engine Keeper in the 1860's.
At the age of 21, he married Jane Campbell at Bothwell in 1865. No children were born in Scotland and none were listed on the Corona Passenger list.
They sailed on the ship 'Corona' under the assisted immigration scheme to New Zealand. Also making the voyage were his parents and 5 of his siblings, Thomas, Agnes, Robert, Marion and Andrew Jr. They arrived at Port Chalmers in February 1876.
By the 1890's, Alexander and Jane were living at Waitaki where he was employed as the Waitaki Bridge Keeper. On retirement they moved into the township of Oamaru and later moved into their son-in-laws home on Tyne street.
Alexander died in March 1909, age 65 at Tyne Street. Jane also died that year, age 65 in October. Both are buried at Oamaru Old & New cemetery.
