Under the colonial immigration scheme his family signed up to make the 3 month voyage out to New Zealand. He was 14 years old when he arrived at Port Chalmers, Dunedin on the ship 'Corona' in February 1876.
Robert worked as a Builder in the Dunedin area. In 1886 he married Australian born, Elizabeth Pelien Good, daughter of Robert and Mary Ann. He was 24 and Elizabeth 23. They married at St Stephens Church, Dunedin.
Robert and Elizabeth had 3 children during their marriage, Andrew, Elizabeth Good and Allan. Their eldest son Andrew born in Australia, was to be killed in action during WWI in France.
In 1937 Robert died age 75 and is buried at Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.
