Lucy Isabella "Belle" Mitchell Broyles was born on November 16, 1858, in Sparta, Tennessee, to Mary Hill, age 25, and James Cox Mitchell, age 23. Belle married Amos Dow Broyles on February 2, 1887, in her hometown. They had three children in 11 years. Her son William Nile was born on October 31, 1887, in Sparta, Tennessee. Her son Charles Hill was born on January 16, 1892, in Sparta, Tennessee. Her son Hosea Clyde was born on August 17, 1898, in White, Tennessee. She died on November 5, 1902, in Sparta, Tennessee, at the age of 43, and was buried in White County, Tennessee in the Hill Cemetery. her mother, Mary Hill Mitchell, died on June 7, 1915, in White County, Tennessee, having lived a long life of 81 years, and was buried in the Hill Cemetery where her daughters Lucy Hill Mills and Belle Mitchell Broyles were buried.

Belle's father James Cox Mitchell left the family when his children were very small under mysterious circumstances--he went to Hamilton County, Tennessee where he had kin and started a second family with Nancy Jane Rogan. They had 3 daughters.

Mary Belle Broyles Ennis stands beside the monument of her paternal grandmother Belle Mitchell Broyles, Belle died when her children were small--her granddaughter was named for her. Her christened name was Lucy Isabella Mitchell, but everyone called her Belle. When she died, Nile her son was called to the house by the ringing of the dinner bell--there afterwards he could not stand to hear the ringing of a dinner bell.

My mother Mary Belle Broyles Ennis was named after grandmother Belle Mitchell Broyles and her grandmother Mary Loucetta Williams Rhea--her father Nile Broyles was called in from the fields by a ringing dinner bell --his mother had died--he could never stand a ringing dinner bell after that.
