Biography

Birth & Death

Penelope Mitchell was born about 1813, in North Carolina, United States, to Arthur B Mitchell (21) and Martha Ector Murphy (16). She possibly died in 1861, at the age of 48.

Marriage

Penelope married Eli Hammons on 5 August 1835, in Jefferson, Tennessee, United States.[1][2]

Households

The 1840 census records only the head of household, but likely Penelope Hammon (27) was the wife of Eli Hammon, employed in agriculture and head of household in District 8, Jackson, Tennessee, United States. The following number of persons resided in the household:
Free White Persons - Males - Under 5: 1 - likely Benjamin J Hammon (3)
Free White Persons - Males - 5 thru 9: 1 - likely William Hammon (6)
Free White Persons - Males - 20 thru 29: 1 - likely Eli (27)
Free White Persons - Females - Under 5: 1 - likely Nancy Adeline Hammon (1)
Free White Persons - Females - 20 thru 29: 1 - likely Penelope Hammon (27)
Persons Employed in Agriculture: 1 - likely Eli
No. White Persons over 20 Who Cannot Read and Write: 1 likely Penelope
Free White Persons - Under 20: 3
Free White Persons - 20 thru 49: 2
Total Free White Persons: 5
Total All Persons - Free White, Free Colored, Slaves: 5
The family did not own slaves, an issue that becomes more important during the Civil War. [3]
In the 1850 census enumerated by R. E. Yost on 08 Oct 1850, Penelope Hammons (1813 37 NC) was the wife of Eli Hammons (1813 37 NC), head of household and a farmer, in Franklin County, Illinois, United States with their children:
William Hammons, farmer Male 16 1834 Tennessee White
J Hammons Male 12 1838 Tennessee White
Adeline Hammons Female 10 1840 Tennessee White
M J Hammons Female 8 1842 Tennessee White
A W Hammons Male 5 1845 Tennessee White
Reuben Hammons Male 2 1848 Illinois White
Penelope was a housekeeper. The birthdates and birth states of A.W. and Reuben suggest that between 1845 and 1848 the family relocated from Tennessee to Illinois near the farm of Penelope's parents Arthur B and Hannah Mitchell.[4]
In the 1860 census enumerated by Joab Durham on 24 Jul 1860, Penelope Hammons (46 1814 NC) lived with her husband Eil Hammons (46 1814 NC) the head of household in Spadra Township, Johnson County, Arkansas, United States, and and their children:
William Hammons Male 23 1837 Tenn White
B J Hammons Male 21 1839 Tenn White
Adeline Hammons Female 18 1842 Tenn White Student
M J Hammons Male 16 1844 Tenn White Student
A W Hammons Male 14 1846 Tenn White Student
Rueben Hammons Male 10 1850 Ill White Student
Obela Hammons Female 8 1852 N C White Student
The dates and states of birth of Reuben and Obela suggest that Penelope and Eli relocated some or all of their family from Illinois back to North Carolina between 1850 and 1852 and then to northwest Arkansas before 1860. Their farm was adjacent to that of Eli's younger brother James Hammons, who had relocated from North Carolina to Arkansas about 1855. It is unclear if these moves were related to the general social unrest in the United States in the decade prior to the American Civil War; however, some Civil War records suggest that Eli and Penelope did not escape the problems associated with the Civil War.[5]
