Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell (November 8, 1900 – August 16, 1949) was an American author, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937 for her epic novel Gone with the Wind, her only major publication. This novel is one of the most popular books of all time, selling more than 30 million copies. Gone With the Wind was chosen as the book of the month for July by the publisher. It sold 50,000 copies in one day in July, 1936, a sales record. [1]

The film adaptation of it, released in 1939, became the highest-grossing film in the history of Hollywood, and it received a record-breaking ten Academy Awards. Mitchell has been honored by the United States Postal Service with a 1¢ Great Americans series postage stamp. [2]

Margaret was born November 8, 1900 in Atlanta Georgia. [3] Her parents were Eugene Muse Mitchell (1866-1944) and Mary Isabelle Stephens (1872-1919).

She went to school at Washington Seminary (Atlanta) 1914-1918. [4] She also went to Smith College in Massachusetts. [4]

She was married first to Berrien Kinnard Upshaw (1901-1949) on September 2, 1922 in Atlanta. [5]

She was divorced from Mr. Upshaw October 16, 1924. [6]

Peggy married John Marsh on July 4, 1925. [7] [8] They were together until the end of her life.

She did not have children.

Margaret died August 16, 1949 after being struck by a car in downtown Atlanta a few days earlier. She was 48. [9]

She is buried in Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery. [3]
