According to Alden Louis Dunlap, as told to his daughter Lynn Dunlap, the Mitchells were of French Canadian descent. James (also called Joseph) & Mary Mitchell came from Detroit in 1853 to settle near St. Peter, Minnesota. Their children were Joseph, Sarah, Agatha, Mary, Flora, Jeremiah, and Louis. Their son Jeremiah "Jerry" Mitchell ran the Travers des Sioux ferry across the Minnesota River.[1]
According to census data, Joseph Mitchell was born about 1818 in the Michigan Territory.[2] His son Jeremiah states father's birthplace as "France" on 1880 Census.[3]
At some point, possibly around 1835, Joseph married Mary Hanley. Census data shows that the couple had eight known children:
Jeremiah Mitchell
Sarah Mitchell
Agatha Mitchell
Florana Mitchell
Joseph Mitchell
Mary J Mitchell
Catharine Mitchell
Louis Mitchell
Joseph does not appear on census data with his family after 1850.[4][5]
