She was employed as a Domestic Servant in Shotts, Lanarkshire.
Bethia was 19 when she married James Fleming, a 23 year old Sawyer of Dalziel. They were married at East Moffat Lodge, Shotts on 14 February 1870. Witnesses were Peter Gl.... and her sister Jane Mitchell.
Bethia and James moved in with his parents at Windmillhill Street, Dalziel. Four children were born in Dalziel, Lanarkshire, Bethia - 2 March 1871, James - 22 February 1872, Andrew - 7 September 1873 and Andrew - 27 November 1874. Andrew 1873 died in his infancy. [1]
Bethia and James took the family to New Zealand after the birth of Andrew. Five made the voyage, James 25, Bethia 24, Bethia 4, James Jr 3 and Andrew 4 months old. They sailed on the ship James Nicol Fleming leaving Scotland on 4 May 1875. The Flemings arrived in Otago on August 4th.
They settled in Mosgiel, Otago where James worked as a Surfaceman and a Contractor.
Bethia Fleming died in 1918 aged 68 and is buried at East Taieri Cemetery.
