Louisa was born in Felton, Delaware. In a note from her granddaughter, Grace Smith Brown, to Bob Sharp, a great grandson, Grace wrote that Louisa worked on the large steamboat, "Frederica." Her son, Elwood Smith, was married to the daughter of Joseph R. McKnitt, captain of the steamship. Elwood Clarence also worked, at times on the "Frederica" steamboat as a matron.
