Biography

Sir William de Montagu was born circa 1213. He was of Shepton Montague, Donyatt, Goathill, Thurlbear, & Chedzoy, Somersetshire, England. Keats-Rohan reports that he succeeded his grandfather as a minor in 1217.[1] Complete Peerage reports he was still under-age in 1227.[2]

He married Bertha circa 1233; They had 1 son (Sir Simon) & 1 daughter (Hawise, wife of Geoffrey de Neville).[3]

Sir William de Montagu died circa 23 September 1270.

"Sir William de Motacute had summons to attend the King into Gascony, against Alphonse 10th, King of Castile, who had usurped the province. The 41st of Henry III he was summoned to be with the King at Chester on the feast day of St. Peter, well furnished with horse and arms, thence to march against Llewellin ap Griffith prince of Wales. 42d of Henry III he had a similar citation."[4]

"WILLIAM de Montagu ([1213]-23 Sep 1270). The Testa de Nevill includes a list of landholdings in Somerset, dated 1219, which includes "Willelmus filius Drogonis filii Willelmi de Monte Acuto est in custodia Alani Basset et terra sua de Turelberiz valet vi.l"[1846]. Bracton records a claim, dated 1223, by "Willelmus filius Drogonis de Monte Acuto…infra etatem" against "Matheum de Cliuedona" for "ecclesiam de Suttona…advocacionem", the defendant claiming that "Willelmus de Monte Acuto avus predicti Willelmi" gave the advocacy to "Gilberto de Say in…maritagium cum Matillide nepte sua filia eiusdem Mathei". "William de Monteacuto the younger" confirmed the donation of Shepton church to Bruton made by "William de Monteacuto his grandfather" by undated charter witnessed by "Domino Reginaldo de Moyun, Domino Roberto de Bellocampo…"[1848]. m BERTHE, daughter of ---. William & his wife had one child: SIMON de Montagu (after 1250-26 Sep 1316, bur Bruton Priory). Confirmation of charters in favour of the canons of Christchurch Twynham, dated 27 Nov 1313, includes a charter under which "Simon de Monte Acuto, son and heir of William de Monte Acuto" confirmed a conveyance made by "William de Monte Acuto" of the town of Pideleton, for the souls of "William his father, and Hawise wife of the said Simon" dated May 1287[1849].[5]

MONTAGUE WILLIAM II Son of Dreux de Montague, heir of grandfather, William de Montague. Born c1210x1232, died 1270.

Willelmus de Monte Acuto filius Drogonis est in custodia Alani Basset per consilium domini Regis Henrici et terra de Septun' valet xv.l. In hundredo de Nortun'.

[BOF, page 378] 1226-1228. Hundredum de Abbedic. Dunneshete valet x.l. Alanus Basset tenet earn cum Willelmo filio Drogonis de Monte Acuto per dominum regem.

[CPR HIII] 12 March 1234 Woodstock. Licence for H. de Trublevill to let the demesnes of the lands late of William de Monte Acuto, who is with earl R. Marshal, in Shepeston, Gerlinton, Thelebergh, Dunyed, Lolleworth, Cotehull, and Culling, and which he holds de hallio regis, to the men of the said towns or others, at metayage or at farm; and the king will save such persons harmless.

[CFR HIII] 31 May 1234 . Gloucester. Somerset and Dorset. The king has taken the homage of William, son of Drogo de Montagu, for the lands formerly of William de Montagu, his grandfather, which fall to William son of Drogo by hereditary right, and the king has pardoned him his due relief that he owed him for them. Order to the sheriff of Somerset and Dorset to cause William, son of Drogo de Montagu, to have full seisin of all lands formerly of William de Montagu in his bailiwick, of which he was seised as of fee on the day he died.

[CCR HIII] 6 January 1235. Rex perdonavit Willelmo de Monte Acuto transgressionem quam fecit capiendo una damam in foresta regis de Blakemor' sine licentia regis. Et mandatum est justiciariis proximo itineraturis ad placita foreste in comitatu Sumers' quod ipsum Willelmum de predicta transgressione non occasionent in itinere suo. Et mandatum est vicecomiti Sumers' quod ipsum Willelmum occasione predicta non gravet vel occasionet.

The king pardoned William of Montague the trespass which he had committed by taking one antelope in the king's forest from Blackmore without the king's permission.

[CFR HIII] 9 June.1235. For William, son of Drogo de [Montagu]. To the barons of the Exchequer. The king has granted to his beloved and faithful William, son of Drogo de [Montagu ], that he may render the fine which Alan Basset made with the king for the debts that William de Montagu, grandfather of the aforesaid William, owed at the Exchequer at the same terms as the king granted to the aforesaid Alan. He has also granted to William son of Drogo that, for the time when his land was in the king’s hand by reason of the war waged between the king and R. Marshal, formerly earl of Pembroke, it is to be allowed to him per annum in the aforesaid fine as much as Alan was accustomed to render per annum at the Exchequer. Order that, diligent inquisition having been taken as to how much time the aforesaid land was in the king’s hand by the aforesaid reason, they are to cause to be allowed to the same William son of Drogo in the aforesaid fine what ought to be allowed to him by right from the aforesaid time. They are to cause this to be done and enrolled thus.

[CCR HIII] 15 June 1247. Rex perdonavit Willelmo de Monte Acuto onmia amerciamenta ad que amerciatus fuit in itinere justiciariorum ad placita foreste in comitatu Sumers' tam de redemptionibus pro venatione quam de assisis nove disseisine et omnibus amerciamentis foreste; et mandatum est eisdem justiciariis quod ipsum inde quietum esse et ipsa amerciamenta a rotulis extrahi faciant.

The king pardoned William Montague all amercements for which he was amerced in the before of the justices to the pleas of the forest in the county of Somerset, both for ransoms for hunting, assizes, novel disseisin, and all fines for the forest; and it was ordered by the same justices to cause him to be acquitted and the fines themselves to be removed from the rolls.

[CCR HIII] 18 July 1252. Mandatum est custodi foreste de Selewode quod in eadem foresta faciat habere Willelmo de Monte Acuta duos damos, de dono regis.

The keeper of the forest of Selwood is commanded to cause William of Mountague to have in the same forest two dams, as a gift to the king.

[CCR HIII] 17 May 1255. Mandatum est Henrico de Bretton' quod in assisa nove disseisine quam Andreas Wak' arramiavit coram eo versus Willelmum de Monte Acuto de tene-mento in Cochull' ad judicium non procedat, set, cum earn ceperit, partibus diem coram rege prefigat epiem eluxerit providendum ad judicium suum inde audiendum.

Henry de Bretton was ordered not to proceed to judgment in the assize of novel disseisin which Andrew Wake arraigned before him against William de Monte Montague of tenement in Cochull' his judgment must be heard there from.

[CPR HIII] 7 December 1255. Simple protection for William de Monte Acute, gone to Wales on the service of Edward the king's son, so long as he be there.

[CFR HIII] 25 March 1263. Dorset. William de Montagu gives one mark for taking an attaint before the justices at the first session etc. Order to the sheriff of Dorset.

[CFR HIII] 24 October 1270. Concerning a fine. Somerset. in the Roll. Phillip Basset has made fine with the king by 500 marks for having custody of the lands and heirs of William de Monte Acuto deceased who held of the king in chief.
