Robert Montagu was the eldest son of Edward Montagu, and his second wife, Anne Rich. [1] He was baptised at St Margaret, Manchester on the 25th of April 1634. [2] His father, a supporter of Parliament during the Civil War, succeeded to the Earldom of Manchester in 1642 [3] and Robert was henceforth known as Viscount Mandeville.
Robert married Anne Yelverton, daughter of Sir Christopher Yelverton Bart., and his wife, Anne Twysden, on the 27th of June 1655. [1] Together they had five sons and four daughters. [1]
He was Member of Parliament, a Whig, for Huntingdonshire from 1660 to the 5th of May 1671 when he succeeded his father as 3rd Earl of Manchester. [4] Marked worthy by Shaftesbury he was in opposition as a peer and voted for the Second Exclusion Bill. Subsequently he decided it was prudent to leave the country and died at Montpelier on the 14th of March 1683. He was buried at Kimbolton. [1]
