William was born in 1706. He was first married in 1727 to Hannah Ball, proven by a suit filed against his executors by the only issue of this marriage, son William Montague. This child was left to be raised and educated by his maternal grandmother, Sarah Ball, until her death in 1742. This chancery suit additionally names the child's paternal grandfather, William Montague who died in Essex County in 1733.[1]

He secondly married to Jane Price 3 December 1729 in Christ Church of Middlesex, Virginia.[2]His will was dated 22 December 1753, proved 7 May 1754 in Middlesex County.

His will named his wife Jane and children, William, John, James, Samuel, Peter (youngest son), Jane, Katherine, Margaret, & Elizabeth. He stated his son William had been well provided for, indicating he was likely the eldest, and leaving him only 40 shillings. He appointed son John as co-executor with his wife.[3]

His widow Jane renounced his will 3 September 1754, stating she was not satisfied with the provisions made for her therein.[4] She became guardian of the following minor orphans upon giving her bond by a Court Order dated 2 December 1755, to wit: Jane, Catherine, James, Samuel, Peter, and Margaret Mountague[5] She too appears to have died in 1757 per a Middlesex Court Order dated 6 December 1757 "to divide the slaves Mrs. Jane Mountague, dec'd, lately held as her dower of the Estate of William Mountague, Gent. and according to his the said dec'ds Will."[6]

Note:
This William Montague gave bond security as the administrator of the will of Mary Ann Ball proved Lancaster County May 9, 1749.[7]
