Biography

Floyd and his family lived in a 2 room sod earth-sheltered house near Wells, Ottawa Co., KS. Their dau Verla (Montague) Smith now (circa 2003) lives on this family homestead. Until a few years ago the original sod earth-sheltered house stood on the property. Family members recall that, as a young man, Floyd worked for the Atchison, Topeka, and Sante Fe railroad for many years. Interestingly, the railroad spur that ends in Minneapolis, Ottawa Co., KS, goes to Iantha, Barton Co., MO, where wife Bertha Ayers was born. The informant, Curtis Montague, has searched the Iantha cemetery but finding no Ayers grave sites. He believes Floyd to have been b. in Ottawa Co., just south of Wells, KS.

My assertion that Floyd met Bertha while working on the railroad is probably untrue.. The Ayers had a homestead North of Minneapolis, Ks. and the Montague homestead was East of Minneapolis. It's very likely both attended the Hall Methodist Church, in the area, and met there. HMC says no records exist for the time period in question.
