Biography
William was born abt 1485 since his parents married 1478, he is 2nd son, and he married abt 1508. [1]
A contract dated 20 Jan 1507/08 was signed for the marriage between William Montgomerie of Grenefield, son to Hugh Montgomerie, Earl of Eglinton, and Elizabeth (Francis) Montgomerie of Stane (bef.1500-aft.1554), daughter of Robert Francis of Stane. [1]
The following year, 22 Jan 1508/09, a charter of lands was drawn up enfeoffing Elizabeth with the lands of Stane.[1]
In 1522 William was further enfeoffed on the lands of Dreghorn or Meikle Dreghorn. [1]
William and Elizabeth had the following known children:[1]
- Arthur, who succeeded William
- Hugh of Auchinhude, who succeeded brother Arthur
- Janet [2]
On the 15th Oct 1542, James V issued a license to William Montgomerie of the Stane allowing him to be excused from the war (with England) because he was "vaik and tender of complectioun, and triiblit with seeknes and infirmite, and may nocht travell without grete danger of thair lyvis,"J etc., etc. "Dischargeing aU our lieutennentis and all vtheris oure ofiiciaris present and to cum, andthare deputis and schireffis in that part, of all calling, vnlawing, preceding, attaching, arreisting, trubling, or intrometting with the saidis Maister William Montgomery and Robert Huntar, thair landis or guidis tharefore, and of thair ofl&ces in that part, be thir presentis foreuir: Prouiding alwayis that the saidis Maister William and Robert send thair eldest sonnys, with thair men, tennentis, and seruandis, to this our oist and weiris, and all vtheris our oistus and weiris, to do ws seruice tharein."[3]
William died before 3 Sep 1546. [2]
