Biography

Little is known of Jane. On Patrick Branigan's death certificate his parents are named as Owen Branigan (farmer) deceased and Jane Branigan maiden surname Mooney deceased[1].

A search of Irish records on Ireland Civil Deaths, NLI, ancestry and findmypast has found a possible death certificate for Jane Brannigan, widow of a farmer, died 7 December 1887 Blackwatertown[2]. Age is given as 84 years which gives a birth year of about 1802-1803. The death was registered by daughter-in-law Mary Brannigan. Blackwatertown is 18 miles from Derrynoose, so possible but inconclusive unless the family members are tracked.

In addition to Patrick, Mary Branigan who married Edward Cassily may be Jane and Owen's daughter, and if the death certificate above is correct, they also had another son. Mary and Edward migrated to Iowa. After Edward's death in 1867, Mary remarried. She died about 1905 and I have not found a death certificate.

There are other Mooney records for Derrynoose and nearby parishes.

Dates are estimates based on Patrick Branigan's age.
