Biography

Alvin was born in 1842 in Massachusetts. By 1875, he is in the silver fields of Lincoln county Nevada as a mill man. Five years later he is an assayer in Silver Reef, Utah, where he also became a school board trustee. Alvin had his wife Rettie with him in 1875. Their son Harry was born in Bullionville, NV in 1876. Their second child was born in 1882 in Silver Reef, but Rettie died shortly after and then the child also. Alvin took Harry back to live with Rettie's sister's family in Algona Iowa. Family lore says he returned to Bullionville, arriving late at night and forced to share a hotel room. He was found murdered the next morning. As the Nevada silver fields were starting to play out by 1880 and Alvin was by then living in Silver Reef, this more likely happened in Silver Reef or somewhere on the journey. ... [1]

Research Notes

Spelling of Tainter may be incorrect, possibly Tayntor.

Dates are from Moore family bible. 1880 Silver Reef UT census shows Alvin, Euretta, and Henry (sic)(probable transcription error). Family lore says after death of Euretta and Baby Moore, Alvin took Harry to live with Euretta's sister's family in Algona and returned to Bullionville NV by train where he was murdered the night of his arrival. Bullionville, Lincoln, NV was already in decline by 1880 so that more likely he was returning to Silver Reef. The train tracks never were laid to there, but made it to Leeds, about 2 miles away. He may have died at any stop on the way. Need death records to verify. Actually, at the time, the railroad may not have been closer than Milford or so, south of Salt Lake City. I have but can't currently locate, a small newspaper story about Euretta returning from a trip to Iowa to fetch her uncle's fiance, which describes the last 300 miles as by coach.

Further research into railroads shows it almost certain that the only line was the original Union Pacific line, so that he would have change to stagecoach travel, possibly in Salt Lake City. It is unknown whether his hotel stay would have been after the train or after after all or some portion of the stage travel.
