Biography

Magdalen Moore was born circa 1656/57, in Isle of Wight county, Virginia, a daughter of George Moore and Jane Barcroft. Magdalen is named as the wife of Thomas Carter in the Will of her father, who died in 1714, in Isle of Wight county, Virginia. [1] The original Will may be viewed here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G9P6-97JS

Thomas Carter, III was born in 1648 on the Nanticoke Plantation, in Isle of Wight county, the eldest son of Thomas Carter, II, born in 1610, in England, and Eleanor Cooke, his wife. Magdalen's husband Thomas wrote his Will on February 6, 1710 and it was proved on April 10, 1710. Children of Madgaden and Thomas are:

  • Thomas Carter, IV, died in 1736, married Elizabeth (possibly Knight) and left his will and progeny in Isle of Wight.
  • Joseph Carter, died in August 1730, married Rachel (possibly Dickenson) and his estate papers were filed in Bertie County, North Carolina.
  • George Carter married Sarah (possibly a Neville) and died in Isle of Wight "On 30 December 1700, Thomas Carter and his wife Magdalen conveyed to …son George Carter… 200 acres, …part of the 400 acres George Moore father of Magdalen… had given to Thomas Carter on 11 August 1673 at …the Red Root Point Branch and the Beaver Dam Branch…" (Boddie, Seventeenth Century Isle of Wight, pp. 642-43)
  • Martha Carter, born circa 1680, married John Jones and died in either Northampton or Hertford County, North Carolina
  • John Carter, born in 1682, who married unknown, died intestate in Bertie County, North Carolina where Moore Carter petitioned for administration
  • Moore Carter, born circa 1688, died 1740, married Jane Kindred, daughter of John Kindred (ca. 1660-1702) of Surry County, Virginia
  • Alexander Carter, born circa 170, died 1769, married Anna Barnes and left a will that was destroyed in Hertford County, North Carolina.[2]

Researchers Notes

Historical Southern Families, Volume I, by John Bennett Boddie, 1957, page 21:

George More & Jane Barcroft Family

“…George Moore married Jane, daughter of Charles Barcroft, so that the latter had three children, William, Jane, and Elizabeth… George Moore who married Jane Barcroft, was usually known as Lieutenant George Moore, was born in 1632, and died in 1714. From his will and other documents, he had four daughters:

(1) Magdalen Moore, who married Thomas Carter and had sons George and Thomas Carter;
(2) Eleanor Moore, who married Richard Piland…
(3) Ann Moore married Thomas White and had issue, Jane, John, Moore Thomas, William and Henry White; and
(4) A daughter who married a Williams and had sons Samuel and John Williams mentioned in George Moore’s will (Chapman, Wills, I, 79-80: “Marriages”, pp. 9, 41, 54; D.B. 1, p, 161).

On 6 February 1710, Thomas Carter… being very sick and weak of body…made his will which left his estate to his wife and devised …unto my daughter Martha the plantation which I now live on, as long as she lives after my loving wife…. Then,…after my daughter Martha [dies] I give the plantation to my son Alexander…. The will was probated 10 April 1710 (Isle of Wight Wills and Deeds # 2, p. 499).

Magdalene was only four years old when supposed son Edward Carter was born in 1660

Removed Edward Carter from this family and proposed a merge with his actual family (son of Edward Carter)

Magdalene did not die in 1673 - she was married in 1673.

She had children from about 1673 to about 1690. She died after 1710.
