Betsy Moore was born about 1803 in the Old Choctaw Nation/Mississippi Territory, the daughter of Pushmataha Choctaw (abt.1764-1824) and Immayahoka Choctaw (abt.1770-aft.1835). She, her siblings and mother are recorded in 1834 when selling the land they inherited after her father's 1824 death.[1]
Betsy was one of four children of Pushmataha recorded in various documents, a fifth child is mentioned but unnamed. This number aligns with the statement made by Thomas McKenney in his biographical sketch of the Chief.[2]
No other details about her life are known at this time.
Research Note:
It is unknown how Betsy and her sister Martha acquired the surname Moore. Some speculation of a DNA connection to "British Governor of South Carolina Patrick Moore" runs into issues in that this is either confused or conflated details of James Moore, an Irish colonial administrator and military officer who served as the governor of Carolina from 1700 to 1703, with Capt. Patrick Moore a British loyalist during the American Revolution. Regardless of the connection, reliable sourced details are not provided for the supposition.
