Biography

William Steel Moore, better known as "Captain Moore," was born in December 1770, to Jacob Moore and his wife, Hannah Steel Moore. William was born on the family farm in Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware. His father was a landowner and blacksmith.

William married Rachel Boulden (aka Bouldin) and they had 8 children:[1]

  1. Jacob Moore, M.D. b: 26 APR 1797 in Mill Creek Hnd., Del.; died: May 5, 1829

  8. Mary Jane Moore b: 11 NOV 1813 in Mill Creek Hundred, Delaware - 15 FEB 1838: married Amos Eastburn, b. 1808 in Milltown, Delaware

According to an 1899 local genealogy and history book, William Steel Moore was of Scotch-Irish descent and active in local politics as he was New Castle County Sheriff for several years after Delaware became a state in 1787. During the War of 1812, he was Captain of the Artillery at Frenchtown, Delaware. In 1803 he bought a 225 acre farm in Mill Creek Hundred where he lived the rest of his life. He and his wife are buried at Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church, New Castle Co., Delaware.[2]

William Steel Moore died on August 26, 1818, on his farm in Mill Creek Hundred, Delaware. His widow, Rachel (Boulden) Moore, died on February 25, 1845, at the family homestead.[3]

NOTE: Apparently the Delaware branch of the Steel family did not use the final "e" = "Steele" but close relatives elsewhere were named "Steele". As William Steel Moore was part of the Delaware clan, his middle name was STEEL, after his mother's surname.[4]
Another source mistakenly asserts that his middle name was "Steele" and his mother's maiden name was also "Steele"[5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
