Matthew Moore was born abt. 1736 in the Colony of Virginia, probably Hanover County, later Louisa County and later still, Albemarle County. He was the son of John Moore and Mary Susanna Jouett. He married Letitia Dalton, born 15 March 1742 in Albemarle Co VA. She was the daughter of Samuel Dalton and Ann (believed to be Anne Dandridge Redd).

On 14 Feb 1765, John Moore gave to his "beloved son Mathew Moore" a gift of land on Andersons Creek, "three negroes to witt, Ben, York, & Squire as also the stock of hogs, horses, & cattle belonging to the same." This was "such part of my estate as I think may be equal to his brothers & sisters." [1] The land was sold on 7 Oct 1773 to Mathew Mamy by "Matthew Moore and Letteciah his wife of the province of North Carolina"..."being in the county of Albemarle & Louisa and containing by estimation three hundred seventy-five acres and bounded by the lands of the late John Peane (deceased), the late Reverend James Maney - John Bornells land and the land of Thomas Walker being on both sides Andersons Creek and is the same that John Moore purchased of Robert Anderson for a patent was granted in the said Andersons name in the year ____" This transaction was witnessed by Tucker Woodson Jr., John Moore Jr., John Martin, and John Clark.[2]

Matthew and Letitia Moore moved to Surry County NC (now Stokes Co) around 1773. His willl is dated October 1801 and was proven in December 1801 (Stokes County NC Will Book 1, Page 9-1/2). Matthew Moore became a very successful business man and land owner in the area. In addition to other activities, he built Providence Iron Works on Big Creek (in the Sauratown Mountains, Stokes Co) in 1800. When he died, he owned land in Stokes and Surry Counties in NC, Patrick County, Virginia and Tennessee. The iron mine was bought by Johnson Clement who married Elizabeth Moore, daughter of Matthew and Letitia Moore.

Moore-60143 and Moore-8840 appear to represent the same person because: merge away useless profile (60143) - dates are irrelevant

This is a line of Moore families proven by Y-DNA to cluster in Haplogroup R-BY99680, a subset of R-L20 < R-U152. They are not related to the numerous Moore families of R-L21.

Two descendants of this Matthew Moore on otherwise separate lines tested Y-DNA to Haplogroup R-Y128326, subset of R-FT214236, subset of R-BY99680. I have an interest in this genealogy group as all six genealogy groups in my Moore Surname study group tested to R-BY99680.

Moore-60143 and Moore-8840 do not represent the same person because: They may have the same name, but they a born on very different years. One in the year 1738 and the other 1750. The Matthew Moore that was born in 1750 Could not Have married in the year 1757. Only the Matthew Moore born in 1738 could have married in 1757. So they Cannot be merged because of the discrepancies in the years they were both born. They cannot be both the same. Please look at the birth years.

Cathi,

I have no sources for the birth year - it is a complete estimate. I didn't have any sources detailing his birth and it wouldn't let me create the profile without inputting a birth of death year, so I just put in a wild guess. I created the profile off of the National Governors Association page erroneously stating that his parents were Matthew and Letita Moore. When I input Matthew and Letita Moore into ancestry, I found that they match this profile here - and I further discovered that the National Governors Association is erroneous in reporting that parentage (all reported biographies of Gabriel Moore report he is unrelated to Samuel B. Moore).
