Biography

Anne was born in 1735. She died in 1757.

Thomas Cotten and Ann Moore were never married. Thomas (Moore) Cotten Jr. was illegitimate and was the only child of Thomas and Ann Moore. There is a deed of gift in Bertie County, NC dated Nov. 16, 1758 where Thomas Cotten gives 25 pounds Virginia currency to his son, Thomas Moore. Another deed of gift for a slave named Bob follows from Ann Moore to her son Thomas Moore. This Thomas Moore, son of Ann Moore, is also named in the will of Ann's father, Epaphroditus Moore, in 1757. Evidently after this legal recognition from his father, Thomas Moore began using the name, Thomas Cotten Jr. He appears as Thomas Cotten Jr. about 1760 or 1761 as a drummer boy in the muster roll of a Northampton County, NC militia company commanded by his uncle, Capt. Samuel Cotten and his father Lt. Thomas Cotten Sr. Thomas Cotten Jr. named his first son Moore Cotten.

Thomas Sr. then married Patience Bridgers and had four children, Charity, b. 1750, James, b. 1752, Lovena, b. 1754, and Talitha, b. 1756. After the death of Patience, Thomas married a second time to a woman named Mary, surname unknown. She is mentioned in a 1767 deed in Northampton County where Thomas Cotten and wife Mary are selling land to William Ruffin. Thomas and Mary had nine children; Temperance, Mary, Lemuel, Noah, Sarah, Joseph, Martha, Elizabeth and Lydia. It is also speculated that between his first and second marriages, Thomas has another illegitimate son with a married woman surnamed Overton. This child was mentioned in his will as Samuel Cotten Overton.
