Biography

Origins and Wives

Seeking proof (if any) that he was the son of John Moore (or Joseph Morse) and Dorothy Barber (or this Dorothy Barber). Until such proof is found, we are disconnecting John Moore, the immigrant, from these parents.

If he was the John Moore of Henham, Essex,[1] then he married (1) about 1625 Elizabeth _____; he married (2) at Little Gaddesden, Hertford, 27 Nov 1633 Elizabeth Rice, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Frost) Rice and stepdaughter of Philemon1 Whale, later of Sudbury. She was baptized at Stanstead, Essex, on 18 Nov 1612 and died in Sudbury, Massachusetts, on 14 Dec 1690 as "widow Elizabeth Moore."[2]

Life in New England

There is uncertainty about when John Moore arrived in New England. If the baptism of Mary, daughter of John Moore, in Berkhamstead on 9 Jan 1641/2 is that of a daughter of the immigrant, he must have arrived after that time.

While the town history claims that John Moore was at the Sudbury settlement soon after it began (1638-1639),[3] the first record of his presence is in September 1642, when he bought of Edmund Rice (father of his soon-to-be son-in-law) a house and land situated in the east part of the town, in the southerly part of what is now the town of Wayland.[4] By this time, he was also married to his second wife, Elizabeth-- step-daughter of Philemon Whale.

There was also a John Moore of Cambridge who owned land there as late as 1643, and there has been an effort thus far fruitless, to prove that they were identical, but it seems doubtful, since the land owned by John Moore of Cambridge has been traced to his descendants. It was finally sold, about the time of the Revolution, by a Cambridge man, who happened at the time to be living in Sudbury, but who was not a descendant of John Moore of Sudbury.

1645: He took the oath of fidelity at Sudbury July 9 1645.[4] The same year, he bought of John Stone a dwelling house and house lot, and all other lands and meadows belonging to Stone by virtue of his right in the beginning of the plantation of Sudbury.

1653: He subscribed to the covenant of Lancaster "11th first mo. 1653," and forty acres of land were laid out in his name, and the first grant of lots (1653. 30th 9mo").[citation needed]

He died 6 January 1673/4.[4]

Last Will & Testament

His will[5] was dated the 25th of August 1668, and was probated the 7th of April 1674. In it he mentions:

  • wife Elizabeth,
  • eldest son son John of Lancaster;
  • eldest daughter Elizabeth, wife of Henry Rice;
  • daughter Mary, wife of Daniel Stone;
  • youngest daughter Lydia, wife of James Cutler, former wife of Samuel Wright;
  • sons William, Jacob, Joseph and Benjamin.

He appoints Rev. Edmund Brown, Lt. Edmund Goodnow, and Mr. Thomas Stevens, overseers of the will. His signature to the will was John More.

In my ancestry book that I have some family members lived in different European countries like I think I had one or two family members that lived in Germany but there was 4 family members listed in Normandy France which was the father, mother, and daughter with her husband but the father not sure how he is part of the family tree, but if I remember the fathers name right I think it was Hefestus De, crepon and was born in 911 ad. Normandy, France, but cuz of the timeline where he was at would make him most likely Danish cuz that was the time when

the Frence king made a deal with the Vikings to stop them raiding them again and gave them the a piece of land which is Normandy, France and convince them to defend them against other foreign Invaders and also some treasures which they agreed and over time they converted to Christianity but yeah I just woundering if anyone has him listed on their ancestors cuz I wanted to find out more on him and his family and how they are tied to our family tree

The claim that Jacob was the son of John appears to be based on Bolton, "Some Descendants of John Moore of Sudbury, Mass.," published in NEHGR at 57 (1903): 300-309, at 301. Before concluding based on this DNA test that Bolton was wrong, I think it would be helpful to understand how well-documented the claimed link between this DNA tester to Jacob is.

Fair enough. In fact, upon closer examination, I found the test takers tree to be flawed.

Moore-39914 and Moore-848 appear to represent the same person because: same origin. same wife (Whale, Rice). These profiles are intended for the same person. Please merge. Thank you.
The Great Migration Directory lists 7 John Moore's. None of them has Henham, Essex, England as an origin. Additionally the town name of "Sudbury" is not found among the John Moore's listed in GMD.

Are we sure this John Moore migrated within the guidelines of PGM? 1620-1640?

I found that he purchased land in Sudbury in 1642 here: https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/new-england-historical-and-genealogical-register/image?volumeId=11719&pageName=300&rId=23531455

TAG 66:75 says he "may have appeared in Sundbury, Mass as early as 1640. He was certainly there on 1 Sep 1642 when he purchased a dwelling house and land from Edmund Rice." https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/american-genealogist-the/image?volumeId=12961&pageName=75&rId=144741824

Can anyone find any earlier reference of him being in New England prior to 1642? If not we, should we remove PGM project box?

A note in the text of this profile indicated that the parents were being disconnected due to absence of evidence. Some time after that was done, a set of parents was reconnected to the profile. I am disconnecting the parents again, since there still does not seem to be any solid basis for identifying his parents.
