My paternal grandfather appointed me "the family scribe" when I was 10 years old. I was given custody of a family genealogy book from 1899, along with some "updates". Over the years, I would interview relatives; borrow their address books, birthday calendars, photo albums, etc. for copying trips to Kinko's or Staples; gather bits and pieces here and there, and add everything to my history drawer, then box, then boxes... Connected with cousins on other branches who had been researching their lines... In the mid 90's, I went online with what I had, was able to connect to others, had a huge tree expansion (but without written records personally verified by me.) I focused on projects requested by family (or gifts for family) and then, when the boxes were sealed up for a move in 2004, didn't unseal the boxes again until a few months ago. Now I feel I need to start over "the right way", but I also feel I'm in a time crunch; running out of time to share everything in a polished way, especially with three of the people that I really want to have everything together for: my paternal grandmother turns 100 this year, my mother-in-law turns 90, and a cousin who has been researching for 40 years is in poor health. Don't get me wrong, I'm also doing this for me, but when my husband's wondering why I'm hunched over my new netbook instead of washing the dishes, I don't feel as guilty listing Mum & Grandma first. (^o^)
Thanks for volunteering! You are now a member of the WikiTree Community. We are building one collaborative tree with just one profile per person. It is important to ensure no duplicates are entered as you add profiles to WikiTree. If you have pre-1700's ancestors to add, please read our Pre-1700 profiles info.
If you need any help, check out the Help section from the menu at top right, or visit the G2G forum and take a moment to introduce yourself in the Tree House. You might also want to check out the introductory WikiTree video that a member created.
We have mentors to help, too.
Welcome!
Karen
