1861-1865 - 14th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry (USA) 1861- 1865; MOTTO: For GOD and the RIGHT! CHRONOLOGY The 14th KY Infantry Regiment was organized in October 1861 at Louisa, Lawrence County, Kentucky under Colonel Laban T. Moore. The men were mainly from Lawrence, Johnson, Floyd and Pike Counties. Their first engagement with the enemy took place on November 8, 1861, at Ivy Mountain, Kentucky - almost a full month before their date of muster. On December 10, 1861 the 14th Kentucky was mustered into service by Lt. C. B. Throckmorton, 4thUS Artillery. From Louisa the regiment marched to Middle Creek, Kentucky, on the Big Sandy ,near the Virginia border and had an engagement with Confederate forces on January 10, 1862. After spending the winter on duty in the Big Sandy region, it was ordered to Cumberland Gap to join George W. Morgan's 7th Division, Army of the Ohio. The 14th Kentucky remained at the Gap until September 1862, and was in the perilious march from that point to Greenup, Kentucky, on the Ohio River, through the mountains of Kentucky, with General Morgan in his retreat. After spending some time at Oak Hill, Ohio, the regiment was ordered to Covington and hence to Louisville and then Danville, via Lexington. After remaining in Danville for a period of time it was ordered back to Eastern Kentucky, and Colonel George W. Gallup assigned to the command of the District, conducting his affairs in a prompt, efficient and energetic manner. The people of his district earnestly petitioned that Colonel Gallup and his gallant command should be permanently located in that section but the campaign of General Sherman against Atlanta demanded all available forces. The 14th Kentucky was ordered to Chattanooga, and participated in all the engagements incident thereto. The regiment was mustered out at Louisa, Kentucky, January 31, 1865. The veterans and recruits were transferred and mustered out at Louisville, September 15, 1865, having been in service nearly 4 full years. It has participated in the following named battles in which loss was sustained: Kentucky: Ivy Mountain, Middle Creek, and Salyersville. Virginia: Laurel Mountain. Georgia: New Hope Church, Cass Station, Marietta, Kenesaw, Lost Mountain, Jonesboro, Atlanta. Tennessee: Johnsonville. Moore b.ca 1830 m. Catherine Thompson. Children of John and Catherine: Pricea, Missouri, MaryAnn, Elsy, Elizabeth, John,Jr., Andrew, Sylvester, Zellamire, and Susan. Also need info on Catherine's parents. Don't think John was born in Lawrence Co., but Catherine and all their children were. They lived in Lawrence Co. at least 40 years. Their daughter, Missouri, was my gggrandmother, m.James Cochran. Lots of info to share.

Abt 2000 - Thanks to Diana Massie; I have a complete copy of the Civil War Pension Records for John B. Moore, Sr. and the papers where his widow Catherine, received her widow's pension. Diana says there were 137 pages, I'll take her word for it, as I didn't count. I have glanced through the papers some already and am very excited. Couple things I have already gleaned from the records are that: 1. John B. Moore, Sr. had a brother David that gave an affidavit for him. 2. Catherine (Thompson) Moore had a brother, George Thompson. 3. That John and Catherine's family lived close together, within half a mile; as they were growing up. He was 65 years old in 1892; which gives us an estimated birthyear of 1827.

2001 - I am corresponding with a cousin of ours, Greg Rice; his ancestor Andrew Moore was younger brother to John B. Moore, Jr., Nora's dad. Well, anyway, John B. Moore Sr. [Nora's grandpa] was in the Civil War and fought for the North. He enlisted from Lawrence Co., Kentucky and served 3 years; was honorably discharged and received a pension because of having a bad heart. On his discharge papers that Greg was kind enough to send me; it lists John B. Moore Sr's physical description: age at discharge: 35 years; height: 6 foot 6 inches tall!!; complexion: light; eyes: blue; hair: light; occupation before enlistment: farmer. His company was I think part of the famous Morgan's Raiders; but I am still checking into that. I am amazed that he lived through the war; as at 6'6" he was a BIG target. But I am sure glad that he did make it. Greg Rice - Feb 13, 2001 Actually, John B. was in the "Army of the Cumberland" that fought in the Atlanta campaign with Gen. Sherman. John B. was feeling ill due to back problems and went home (on his own) during the war! He went back and then was later medically discharged...Greg Rice.

2002 - Subj: Moore genealgoy Date: 5242002 3:39:09 PM Pacific Daylight Time From: MoreSamNRam; To: PTalb54355 Paula, I have made this notes on the family of John B. Moore Sr and his family from birth records. John B Moore was listed as being born in North Carolina. Catherine Thompson was born in Lawrence County. Their daughter Susan G. b. February 23, 1874 in Boyd County, Kentucky stated that they were residents of Lawrence County though. I have noticed on the census records John B. Moore Sr.also lists his birthplace as Kentucky. Do you know which one is correct. Also Catherine's parents were Andrew and Katherine Kazee? I was looking at the 1850 Lawrence County census, it shows Andrew to be 72 years of age and Katherine, his wife to be 75 years of age. Could Katherine have been 55 when she had Catherine? I know that its not unheard of. I just wanted to know where that information came from. Also I have these notes for Elijah H Judd, after reading Naomi Judds biography and doing some digging through family files. Naomi's father Charles Glen Judd was the son of Roy Ogden Judd and Sallie Ellen Moore. The Moore name, I have found on a family file on the internet. Naomi never mentions the Moore name in her book though. Naomi states in her book that her grandfather Roy Ogden Judd was the illegitimate son of Mary Jane Judd and the areas only doctor, Mary Janes was the daughter of Elijah H. Judd and Fannie Pack She doesn't mention the Pack name in her book and she doesn't mention the fathers name in her book. Elijah Judd would not allow Mary Jane to marry the young man and Mary Jane died in her 20's. Elijah and Fannie raised Roy Ogden Judd. When searching through some of the Thompson family history on the internet, I had found earlier, a family tree that had a branch of the Mckinster family, and it stated that Roy Ogden Judd's father was James Oliver Moore, son of Wesley Moore, who was the son of William P. Moore and Lucinda Miller ( Lucinda Miller was William P. Moores second wife, his first was Nancy Thompson) and then I did some checking into James Olivers files and found out that he was the doctor of the area of Mattie Kentucky, but he did not go to medical school and come back to pratice medication until after Roy Ogden was born. So that would make Sallie Ellen and Roy Ogden 3rd or 4th 1/2 cousins through the Moore family, if Sallie Ellen Moore's ( if that is her maiden name) father John C. Moore is a descendant of William P. and Nancy Thompson Moore, daughter of Richard Thompson and Margaret Barr. I don't have prove that Sallie is a Moore-Thompson descendant though, but I thought it was interesting that she might be. Ricky Skaggs is a Thompson descendant, his mother Dorothy Mae Thompson Skaggs was the daughter of James Walter and Sarah Griffith Thompson, James is a descendant of Samuel Thompson, son of Richard and Margaret Barr Thompson. So that would make Naomi Judd and Ricky Skaggs distant cousins. I guess what, you a distant cousin to Ricky Skaggs and a cousin to Naomi Judd anyway. Just a little spice to add to your family genealogy. Sincerely Sharon Morehouse
