  • Norris family notes

According to a letter Mitchell J. Moore wrote to Fannie Moore Norris in the 1940's, George W. Moore Jr. and his stepmother, Polly, did not get along well. When George was about 16 (1848?), Aunt Polly and George had a confrontation and George left home going to Alabama. He may have gone to live with his uncle, Green Moore and may be the 19 year old George in the Randolph County 1850 census, but this is not proven. George did marry in 1853 to Eliza Jane Giddens in Barbour County, Alabama, and in December, 1854 the couple moved to Bienville Parish, Louisiana, in a wagon train with Eliza's parents, Jacob and Eliza Waters Giddens and other related families.

In about 1860 George W. Moore, Jr. got into a disagreement with another family and killed one of them, so to avoid further problems, the family moved to Hope, Arkansas. In early 1862, George joined the CSA 19th Arkansas Infantry and Eliza Jane and the children returned to Ringgold Louisiana.

George was at Ft. Pillow in April, in Iuka, Mississippi in September, and fought in the battles of Corinth and Davis Bridge in October 1862. In Louisiana, one of the children died and Eliza Jane was being harassed by "Jayhawkers" (draft-dodgers and deserters) so George deserted in December 1862, returning home to Louisiana to protect his family. Later, George rejoined the CSA closer to home and served in the Louisiana 6th Cavalry, rounding up "Jayhawkers" until the end of the war in 1865. George W. Moore, Jr. and his wife Eliza Jane spent the rest of their lives in the area of Ringgold, Louisiana.
