Biography

Agnes was born in c1844, she died in 1925.^[1]

Agnes Moore’s parents were Berry Moore (died July 22, 1853) and Anne Kilpatrick and they lived in the Townland of Lisnadill about 3.5 miles south of Armagh city in Co. Armagh. They had a total of 4 sons and 5 daughters:

Thomas Moore born May 22, 1824 was Libby Moore’s grandfather James Moore born March 22 1836 John Berry Moore born March 22, 1838 Margaret Moore born April 1, 1840. She married Joseph Browne, an accountant and they lived in Belfast. Eliza Jane Moore born May 11, 1842...married a Mr. Robinson, was widowed, and then married W.J. Reilly of Keady, Co. Armagh Agnes Moore born April, 1844 who married James Simons, and lived in Lislin, Drung, Co. Cavan Margery Moore born March 1, 1846, married Edwin McKinstry of Killyfaddy, Co. Armagh Mary Ann Moore born March 1, 1848, married Matthew Dunwoody of Newry, Co. Down Susanna Moore born February 26, 1850, married Mr. Reaney in Dungannon, Co. Tyrone Hugh Kilpatrick Moore born January 22, 1853 and died in 1860.

Patricia Kostelnik noted: “!BIRTH/DEATH/BURIAL: Tombstone in Drung Cemetery, Cavan, Ireland SIMONS  Erected by James Simons, Lislin, In memory of his loving and devoted wife, AGNES, who departed this life March 1925 aged 80 years. Also the above James SIMONS who departed this life 17 May 1938 aged 91 years. Going by this, James Simons was born in 1847, and Agnes in 1845

In the Griffith’s Valuation for Drung Parish, there were no Simons listed in either Townland in 1856/57. I don’t think James was born at Lislin, but he did live there a good part of his life.

The James Simons born about 1846 was born in either Lislin, Drung Parish, or 93 Main St., Cavan Town. The Fyfe Family Tree does list a Townland for this Simons family [Tullyvalley], but I knew it to be Lislin, Parish of Drung, Barony of Tullygarvey, Cavan. James did live in Lislin where his family was raised and he had a farm; however, he was also a saddler in Cavan town and maintained a residence over the saddler’s shop. He was one of several generations in the family known as ‘Simons the Saddler’ and was well known in Cavan. He not only lived over the shop , with some of his children staying with him during the week, but he also had a garden and cows in the rear of the property as well as on the farm in Lislin. James was also an Auctioneer.”

{Note in the Civil Records death notices, James Simons apparently died in 1936 not 1938 as is stated in some places. The date on his tombstone was probably added a couple of years or more after his death.}

Children of James Simons (c.1846-1936) and Agnes Moore: (Libby Moore notes that they had 9 children, with 7 living in 1911). Some birth registrations are available. The census of 1911 shows James (age 67) and Agnes (age 65) living with a servant Kate Kavanagh in Lislin, Drung, Cavan. Children include: Frederick Moore Simons (c.1868-1942), Laura Maude Simons (1873-?), Ernest Simons (1874-?), James Arthur Simons (1876-1944), Helen Simons (1880-?), Ida Olive Simons (1881-?), Ethel Simons (1885-1952), and Hugh Moore Mervisn Simons (1887-?)
