Biography

George Elcanor (also listed as Elcano and Elkins) Moore was born in Cool Springs, Iredell County, North Carolina, USA on May 9, 1846. George was one of ten children of James N. Moore and Mary Melissa Reeves of Iredell and Rowan County.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] At the age of 27, George Elcanor Moore married Flora Elizabeth Gillespie (age 28) on Feb 24, 1874 at the Back Creek Presbyterian Church in Mount Ulla Township, Rowan, North Carolina.[3][14][15] George was a farmer. George and Flora inherited land and a monetary sum from Flora's father, Archibald Gillespie. Both Flora and George were Presbyterian and they raised their family in the Fifth Creek Presbyterian Church. Flora died on 29 March 1929 and George on 6 February 1935 in Cool Springs Township. Both were buried in the cemetery at Fifth Creek.[2][16]

Children

George and Flora had three children.

  1. Mary Jane "Mamie" Moore (1875-1940) Mary Jane did not marry. She was a practical nurse and lived in homes where she worked. She was living in Statesville when she died. She was buried at Fifth Creek.[3][17]
  2. William Wilson Moore (1877-1952) He was often called Willie when young and later in life just WW Moore. He married Lottie Blanch Bowman on 17 June 1916 in Iredell County.[3][18][19][20]
  3. Martha Drusilla "Mattie" Moore (1879-1967) Mattie as she was called married first Henry Euel Rudacil (1870--1911) in Rowan County and later after Henry's tragic death, she married Espie Nicholas Montgomery (1876-1946) in Statesville, North Carolina. She moved to Winston-Salem, Forsyth County after her second marriage.[3][21][22]

Residences

George was born in Iredell County. His father worked and lived on a farm in the area of Cool Springs, Iredell County, North Carolilna. After the U.S. Civil War, George moved with his parents to Scotch Irish Township, Rowan County, which was just across the county line.

  • Feb 24, 1874, George married Flora Elizabeth Gillespie at Back Creek Presbyterian Church in Mount Ulla Township, Rowan County, North Carolina. The Rev A.E. Chandler officiated the wedding.[15]
  • Sep 2, 1874, Flora Elizabeth Moore, wife of George E. Moore, inherited 42 acres of land in Rowan County on Withers Creek valued at $209 from the estate of Archibald Gillespie. Neighbors included Poston and Goodman families.
  • Dec 10, 1874, bought 158 acres of land for $265 from his brother Robert Sydney Moore. This property was in both Scotch Irish Township, Rowan County and Cool Springs Township, Iredell County[23]
  • May 16, 1876, sold 42 acres of land in Rowan County for $220 to Levi Bostian[24]
  • June 18-19, 1880 Scotch Irish, Rowan, North Carolina; farmer[9]
  • 1890 unknown but probably Scotch Irish Township[25]
  • June 13, 1900 Scotch Irish Township, Rowan, North Carolina, farmer, owned real estate free of mortgage[10]
  • April 29, 1910 Scotch Irish Township, Rowan, North Carolina, farmer, owned real estate free of mortgage[11]
  • 1920 Broadbay, Forsyth, North Carolina, not a farmer, his son WW Moore was working as an inspector in a knitting mill[12]
  • July 23, 1924, He purchased 23.5 acres of land for $10 from Fred R. and Katie J. Sills in Iredell County. His neighbors were J.R. Abernathy, O. G. Sills, and Mr. Davis.[26]
  • April 9, 1930 North Carolina, living with son William W. Moore, in Cool Springs Township, Iredell County. George was retired. His son WW Moore was a farmer and owned his home.[13]
  • February 6, 1935, He died in Cool Springs Township, Iredell County.[1]

According to estate records, George E. Moore assumed guardianship for his youngest brother, Lindsay Cawell Moore, after his father, James N. Moore, died in August 1873. Lindsay was still living with George in Scotch Irish Township, Rowan County when the 1880 and 1900 Census were taken.[9][10][5]

In 1920, George's son, William Wilson, along with his wife, Lottie and their young son, Edgar, lived with George in Broadbay Township No. 1, Forsyth County, North Carolina. In 1930 at the age of 84, George was living with his son William Wilson Moore and his family in Cool Spring, Iredell County.[12][13]

George was a farmer.[9][10][11][12]

Death

George died on Feb 6, 1935 in Cool Springs Township, Iredell, North Carolina. George Elcanor Moore is buried at Fifth Creek Presbyterian Church, Iredell, North Carolina, where his father and other family members are buried.[1][2]
