Biography

Mary was a Friend (Quaker)

Mary was born on 8d 8m 1753 [8 Aug 1753] in Dutchess, New York Colony.[1] She was the daughter of William Moore and Mary (Palmer) Moore.[1]

Mary Moore married Zopher Green in 1772 in Dutchess County, New York.[2] The following is an excerpt from the records of the Nine Partners monthly meeting:[3]

Nine Partners Twenty fifth Day of the Sixth month in the year of our Lord one thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy two [1772].
Whereas Zophar Green and Mary Moore of Charlotte Precinct in Dutchess County … declared intentions at several monthly meetings … Consent of parents … was allowed of by s’d meeting
[signed] Zophar Green Mary Green …
as witnesses there of here unto Set our hands …

Notes

  • Quaker Calendar - There has been much confusion over the dates in Quaker records. Friends used numbered months and days rather than what they considered pagan names for them (i.e. "Thursday" coming from "Thor's Day"). Thus, when the secular calendar was changed in 1752, making January the first month instead of March, Friends began calling January "First Month".
