John was born about 1771 in Virginia. He was the son of Charles Moorman and Mary Venable. On 18 Feb 1795 in Campbell County, VA he married Rachel Haden. They had 4-5 children. His date of death is unknown.
Note: A will located in Warren County, KY, probated 29 Jun 1829 has a John Moorman bequeathing items to his "wife Nancy Moorman" and his children Patsy, Jane, John, Thomas, James, Lewis and an Elizabeth Moorman (possibly a grandchild?). This is a different John Moorman as the relationships do not align.
The family of Moorman is of English extraction and the name is derived from moor, the prairies or commons of England, i. e., "man of the moor.". The earliest recorded Moorman who settled in Virginia is Zachariah (born 1732, son of Thomas and Rachel Moorman). He settled five miles south of Lynch's ferry. The Moorman's, by intermarriage with other Campbell county families, seem to have a more extensive connection than any other family in the county: many from the different branches removed to northwest and southwest sections, descendants of whom may be found still bearing the name. Moorman marriages among Campbell's earliest records:......1795. John Moorman to Rachel Haden. [1]
